I was just reading a little debate on another thread there about whether Celtic should still be classed as a Catholic club or not. Do you think we've gone beyond that now, with a stronger association towards political connotations over religious ones? Or are we still a club with a strong Catholic identity?

Mostly Catholic beliefs and heritage, but it's a club for all.

As I posted last night in the hun chat thread:
It never has been based on religion. McNair, Thomson, Peacock, Stein, McGrain, Dalglish and so many other greats from throughout the long history of the club are proof enough of this.

"The Protestant"
"Why?"

We are a club proud of our Irish roots, I would not call us Catholic and I would not say our identity is our political connotations, as as we can see just from this forum we have Celtic fans who have completely different politics to one another.

Even if we go back to the days of Brother Walfrid and the foundation of the club and it's noble charitible intents, there was never anything about it being exclusively Catholic. It was a charity to help those msot in need - making sure children were getting fed in the East End etc. There was never anything more to it than that. Am sure Brother Walfrid would not have turned any kids or family in need away, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Celtic were founded by a Catholic with good intentions but as an entity it is open to all class & creeds.

No, we're a football club not some sort of church outing. I'm proud of our roots and they obviously have a strong catholic background, but in this day and age we're an organisation open to all and quite frankly the only reason we've been thought of as a catholic club for so long is because of the bigots across the city.

It's a club steeped in Catholic traditions and history, but has never been exclusive to Catholics - unlike the "blue" equivolent.JC Anton, Northerner, Clint Eastwood and 13 others like this. -

What's great about Celtic, however, is we never discriminated based on religion. Some of our greatest players (and our greatest manager) have been Protestants.StPauli1916, Derrybhoy1, The IRA and 2 others like this. -

Are Celtic FC a religious club - Definitely Not..but when you look at the people
who founded the club then you can't ignore the matter altogether. -
It's a club for all - probably the best way to describe Celtic
