If an American couple moves to Scotland and has a baby, the baby is both Scottish AND American.

That's actually my position too, mate. I've argued exactly that on here on many occasions. That's why I never said exclusively Irish in the same way that no one serious is arguing that we are exclusively Catholic. This is why it's better not to use this kind of loose language (Irish club, Scottish club, Catholic club) when talking about these issues and be more precise.

Aye, quite. I'm saying that the sentence "Celtic is an Irish club" isn't entirely true. It was founded in Scotland, so for me it's a Scottish club with an Irish background.

    Correct.

But it's also an Irish club - hence why the Irish tricolour has flown above CP since * knows when, despite best efforts to have ot removed....

Celtic is the most diverse football club you can think of.

If it is to be stripped back, it's only a football club.

But, most of us will know Celtic is not just simply a club where football is played...

The question was "Are Celtic still a Catholic club", Maybe people missed the STILL part of the question but heyho not my problem.

As I said, someone's religion has absolutely * all interest to me. I tend to just go with a * will always be a * irrespective of religion, colour or indeed team they support :50: Although this seems to have irritated you, but that can be filed under 'No interest to me'.

Anyway you crack on with the snide comments, although hopefully they aren't aimed at me for an obvious reason, but irrespective they have also been filed in the 'No interest to me file' :56:

We've never been a Catholic Club. That, to me, implies that we were/are exclusively Catholic.

Catholicism features heavily in our history though and is nothing to be ashamed of.

There's a catholic identity of course, the majority of fans are catholic but that doesn't mean we are a catholic club. We operate ourselves as a club open to all and I think it's quite clear that's what we are.

This is the point IMO. If smart people like you and Padmill (who I would bet money basically agree on everything important regarding this issue) interpret that expression so differently and therefore vote differently, it just bears out my point the the language is genuinely ambiguous. Not a problem usually (it's how we naturally talk), but sometimes it's best to pick your words more carefully than the question in this poll.

He can identify however he likes, but he was born in Malaysia and lived there for a few years.

Aye because to me it just means it identifies as Catholic, not exclusively so, like my Catholic school that had Muslims, Sikhs, Jews etc etc.

We have never identified as Catholic to the best of my knowledge though, just steeped in the culture of those who followed the Catholic religion in Scotland - mainly the Irish immigrant community and the Irish diaspora.

It's actually a complicated as * question, in socialogical terms.

That's why I specified to you.

I'm aware he was born there as well, that's where the question came from.

Aye. He's not solely Malaysian. But he's every bit as Malaysian as he is Scottish.

It's very different, comparing a person to a club. Maloney has the benefit of being able to choose who to play for and which country he identifies with most. When it comes to a football club, it's more open to interpretation.

Interesting that. I think parents heritage and cultural heritage comes into it more.

Certainly while I was growing up in Austraila I still called myself Scottish

Regardless, that's a different topic, we're culturally Irish and I don't think that can be denied. I can remember having the oddest feeling going for Scotland against Ireland at the game at Celtic Park, with the Irish fans flying Tri-Colours and singing the Fields at Paradise... it felt very, very odd.

Not just foreign football fan's but without doubt down here in England as well. How they'd describe us most in my experience..

The Catholic faith has definitely been a big part of our support and our founders throughout the year's, although diluted as time has gone on..

    I'm not Catholic either myself..

Like I said, it's down to the person I suppose. If you are born in country x to parents from country y then you are very much both of those nationalities, in my opinion.

Just think it's a bit more of a grey area when it comes down to football clubs etc.

I disagree mate. Don't wanna go off topic but I've never classed myself as English and was born and raised here all my life..

All my cousin's and stuff who were the same as me have all been the same, and we'd change our accents when in each other's company..

Know plenty of other's whether it's Irish descent, Spanish etc down here that do the same..

That's the crux of it, I don't think anyone here is ashamed of out association with Catholicism and I don't think anyone is suggesting that we are a club solely open to those of a certain faith.

    We're a football club.

We tend to sit towards the left side of the political spectrum (not applicable to all fans of course).

We tend to have a decent level of support for minority causes (not applicable to all fans).

We have strong connections to Ireland, through our founder(s) and fans.

We have strong connections to charitable causes, through our founder(s) and fans.

We have a pretty loose connection to Catholicism through our founder and, what I would guess is a minority of our fans.

We're a lot of things, I just wouldn't describe us as a catholic club as it's so far down the list of things I would associate with Celtic.
