Do you consider Celtic a Catholic club?

I'm Scottish and have lived here all my life so I'm fairly unqualified to even talk about it

 

It depends on how you view the football club. Is it the bricks and mortar and the field or is it the fans. If the stadium had of been moved before wee Fergus came then we would still be Celtic even though our location had changed. For me that answers the question whether it is our location or fans that define us. Many of our fans identify as Irish therefore we are at least a large part Irish. by the same reasoning we are also a large part Scottish.

 

Not a Catholic club we never excluded anyone because of their religion unlike our neighbours across the city. Although the club certainly does have Catholic origins I don't think that's enough to call it a Catholic club.

 

Erm, not quite sure of what you mean by "aimed at me for obvious reason".......what's this obvious reason you're on about?

You seem very angry or irate for some reason? What's the deal with that?

I've not made any snide comments, well no more snide than yours anyways, what was the need to immediately refer to your fellow fans as being bad as huns for?

We HAVE an Irish catholic background, never mind being SEEN as having one.

I really do not get the issue with many folk here. We have Catholic beginnings and have NEVER persecuted anyone nor denied anyone for being non-Catholic nor any other religious background or ethnicity etc.

We were even different from Edinburgh Hibernians when they started out - their players had to be Catholic and tee-total. We've never had such stipulations or any of the sort...

The label 'Catholic club' implies a club that is exclusive to Catholics. This is patently not the case with Celtic, as we all know. So, in that sense, no Celtic is not a Catholic club.

That said, it is utter folly and historically inaccurate for anyone to deny the significant role that Catholicism has played in the history of Celtic Football Club. It has been there right from the start. When Celtic is the brainchild of a Marist brother it cannot be any other way. The continuation of the unofficial - but nonetheless existing - relationship between the club and the Church was illustrated by the fact that the Catholic Young Men's Society used Celtic Park on a regular basis for open air masses and the Church held other events such as Marian day festivities at the stadium. This went on for decades.

In spite of all of the above, I voted somewhat on the poll. Celtic is becoming - I feel - like a microcosm of society as a whole when it comes to religion. ie. the religious part of the club's(and it's support's) identity is fading into the background. Even worse than that, there are people attached to the club who actively want to deny it and shun it. This is a great sadness to me but no doubt it is pleasing to some others.

Someone said earlier in the thread - something along the lines of - Celtic is whatever you want it to mean to you. I suppose there is some truth in that. There are people on here who are fanatical about the Irish Republican element of following Celtic. In my younger days I was too. But, if I'm being honest, I don't really care too much about it these days. I still believe in the cause of Irish reunification but I don't get too wound up about it or spend too much time thinking about it anymore. It isn't as important to me as it once was. But I get that for some people it is. By the same token, Celtic will always retain a Catholic identity to me, and that part of Celtic's identity will always remain important to me. As P O'Neill said in his excellent post, it is that which makes Celtic more than just another sports team to me. It is that which takes my passion for the club to a higher plane.

There are many solid and noble reasons to support this great club. We should all just be thankful that we do. We're a part of something special and that thought unites us all.

So you either have or haven't made any snide comments, if you aren't sure I cant help you there. Yes I pointed out that any fan that needs to tie religion to our club are basically acting in the same way as 'they do' with 'their' religion, something we all know is utter * but again, as with the original question and the use of "still", if people don't get that heyho not my problem.

Oh at times I can be condescending, I have no problem admitting that at all, but at least when I am I can achieve it though.
I'm sure if you sit quietly and read over the thread you will find the answer you seek.
