im having this debate with my cousin he says celtic are a scottish club

but i say celtic are an irish club in a scottish Institution

if the irish had not moved to glasgow there would be no celtic fc !!!

also if you watch the celtic connection even celtic's greatest ever skipper said celtic are an irish club in a scottish Institution !!!

what are you thoughts on this ???

That videa was so obviously playing to the Irish market it was trying to milk. Celtic is a Scottish club because 90% of our players and fans have been Scottish (regardless of where there ancestors were from) in our history. We only started to get bigger numbers of Irish fans in the last decade or so as cheap travel came more available and there was more money in Ireland. The club would have folded a long time ago if it had relied on fans from Ireland. Celtic is like Billy Connolly: has Irish roots but is clearly Scottish and is proud of both. I dont like setting the Irish and Scots against each other cause lets face it they are very similar people.

Scottish with Irish heritage. Look at our greatest players, the vast majority are Scots.

Fair enough but its been a thread before. The conclusion was Celtic wouldnt exist without the Irish founder but after that it wouldnt have existed without its largely Scottish fanbase and most of its success was built on local Scottish players until ten years ago or so. So, in a way its both but it is a Scottish club. Its also a sort of Irish roots club for Scots with Irish ancestors but a roots club always has to be outside the country whose roots are celebrated. Reason I mentioned Billy was he has the best attitude to this all: he is really proud of Scotland but also fond of his Irish roots and never sets one against the other. Thats why I like Irish stuff like music etc but I dont go for political stuff where Irish and Scots may come into opposition. I think the two people are nearly identical anyway, especially the north of Ireland and the west of Scotland.

Irish founded, play in Scotland, debate could go on forever, as it has done for decades. The reason they fly Irish flags at CP, have you ever saw a vendor selling Scottish flags.

Most Scots with Irish blood have as much Scottish blood, often more. Not many pure breeds left 160 years after tha famine! I have an Irish surname but 3 out of my 4 grandparents have no Irish in them. I think thats pretty common for a fairly small minority like Scottish catholics. So most Irish descent people in Scotland consider themselves Scots even if they are proud of Irish roots too. Like I say, if you set one part of your heritage against another thats bad stuff. I think Celtic's club mission stratement reflects this when it says they are a Scottish club but proud of its Irish roots and that reflects the core fanbase which is people who certainly mainly consider themselves to be Scots although proud of their roots. So the club mission statement is bang on IMO.

Any distinction seems pretty arbitary....the Scots and the Irish have such an incenstuous history together. I think the clues in the name, we're best described as a Celtic club. But if we're gonna push it, Celtic FC's heart is Irish, no doubt about it.

Yeah, I suppose you could say Scottish by location, but Irish by history.

There are LOADS of clubs founded by foreigners. Off the top of my head I know Boca Juniors were founded by Italians. Does that make them an Italian club? lol

I think theres a few in Italy founded by English perhaps but seriously wisen up please.
