Rangers were founded by protestant Irishmen. Most of their symbolism and songs relate to Ireland and especially Ulster orange culture and not much to do with Scotland. All that orange stuff about the Boyne etc looks alien and imported to Scots outside west-central Scotland. I think they are a Scottish club but mainly focussed on Ulster protestant roots and culture.

The reason why people wave tri-colours is to wind up huns

and I know for a fact that a lot of supporters of wee clubs turn into pretend huns for a day just for the wind up - even go out and buy union jacks to do it. Mental age of 10!!

Great post. The thing is, I dont think we still have to consider OURSELVES Irish for the club to be. The club still remains an avenue for us to express that part of our history & heritage. Maybe you could compare it to reggae clubs in london or something...most the people who go there would now consider themselves English but the heart of the place is Jamaican.

The best things in human history belong to all of mankind (except Tunnocks teacakes which belong to Mr Tunnock).

Good point. The bulk of the Glasgow people who supported the club were traditionally pretty serious socialists which is international not about one country so thats got to be part of the spirit if the club which after all is the fans.

i reckon we cant and shouldnt forget our heritage. the story of why celtic were founded is a classic tale. and should not be forgotten.
i dont think there is a family who dont look back at their forefathers with a fondness and pride on what they did or achieved so long ago and against the odds. but the reality is that celtic are a scottish club playing in a scottish league. its as straight forward as that.

Scottish club with a strong Irish connection/heritage.

Yep, we were founded for an irishman and alot of early followers were irish immigrants (and so the image developed) but you can't argue that we're an Irish club, thats just clutching straws a bit :84:

Lots of clubs are founded by foreigners and celebrate the image of another country for a number of reasons.
