I apologise for another thread on our recent signing policy, but I've put in a fair bit of work here when I should reeeeally be doing something else.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Anyway this isn't a dig or a fanatical defence of either manager, in fact let me state quite clearly that I'm a huge fan of both managers. Being brought up in the 80's and 90's, Martin O'Neill changed everything for me so I am eternally grateful. And also I am of the thinknig that Strachan is taking us onwards and upwards while cutting the wage bill dramatically.

Alas I present my research documenting the signings of both managers in their tenure (apologies for size):
Anyway I’m writing more than I should here but remember each manager has achieved superb things - all I wanted to do was put down on paper some facts and reasonable assumptions about the quality to balance the arguments about how much so and so has spent, how little so and so has spent, etc etc.

The amount O'Neill spent in the year 2000 (£20m was it?) was incredible for us (and a lot of football clubs) at that time too. MON did have more to work with.

All figures taken from wikipedia although I've cross checked them with my own fountain of knowledge. I've also missed out a decent whack of reserves (Mizuno et al) and where fees were undisclosed went with general paper talk. I think these figures are as close as we might get though correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a shame we couldn't spend 6m on two players in one transfer window now.

I know Donati was less than the touted value because I've read a quote from Strachan talking about his fee, I think a few signings for both Mon and Wgs were less than the touted value.
Also to make it a better comparison I think you should throw in how much we made from selling players under both managers. -

In their respective first seasons Martin O'Neill spent £19.6m on players, compare that to the £8.2m that Strachan was able to spend and still bring success then i can't see why so many people don't like him,
I've had my doubts about the Wee man before but i'm definitely in full support of him now -
Good point, although too much work for me lol. Both managers inherited some real quality as well which skews things a little, but Larsson in his prime really shows that O'Neill started off with more favourable players... -

These managers had totally different financial climates to operate in and both did excellent given what they were up against. They both should recieve the highest praise possible -

Ricardinho, I'll bump up an old thread of mine where I did just that, and maybe you could merge these two?

is it not funny how you gave BIG BOBO a 5 and he doesn't get his game. :97:
Is that not another player who has a problem with WGS.
If you look at the squad now the only two players that WGS did not sign is McGeady and Bobo.
it wont be long before we are saying that with full sqaud is all WGS buys.
I would give both the above players a 5 myself and they would be first picks every week -

Anyway, you also have to take into consideration when you are comparing value that transfer values have increased dramatically, especially the English market where MON operated.
There is no way strikers of the calbre of Sutton or Hartson who were consistant goalscorers in the EPL would move now for 5-6m, it'd be closer to double that.
