Under no circumstances whatsoever am I suggesting that Cal is on his way to the knacker's yard.
BUT, he is 31 years old. He averages 50 odd games a season and time marches on.
So the question is not who can take his place on the first team sheet, but to whom does the arm band go to.
Celtic have never, technically speaking, had a foreign captain, with the exception of NL, an Irishman.
Most of the incumbent midfielders can be ruled out due to them being either not suited for the role, or unlikely to be here in 2/3 years.
CCV would be the "natural" choice, but again, the danger of him being poached away is a little too high. I cant see anyone else along the backline being capable to taking up the mantle either.
Are there any natural choices coming through the youth ranks who should be bled into the first team set up now?
Are there any Scottish based players who look a good fit, and need to be signed asap to start familiarising themselves with the expectations?
Would you give it to a non Scottish/ Irish player?

I suspect we bought McCowan to replace him in a season or two.

IF Tierney came back and if he could find some consistent fitness he's the obvious choice as a captain in time. Hopefully cal has another 3/4 years in him. positionally in a constantly changing environment I think miller is a no brainer..

For me, at the moment, AJ is the standout candidate.

I honestly think we'll lose AJ in 2 seasons or so.
Battlers like him are few and far between. -
We'll see how things go but who knows what happens in that time frame. We played Hibs on the 22nd of November 2020 and of the 20 man squad, 3 are still at Celtic today. Calmac, GT and Bain.

If only Kasper were a few years younger.
The obvious choice from the current squad is CCV. He already leads our defensive line, plus centre halves almost never get subbed barring injuries. I'd argue Scales might be a good shout as well. He's usually overlooked, yet he's always dependable. It's possible he'll outlast CCV who's reportedly attracting interest from several clubs. -
It's tricky- Brown was fine until he wasn't. It would be good to avoid a repeat of that.

I think he's got a few years yet. Quitting Scotland will help and we will hopefully be sensible about his minutes. He won't be playing every minute of every game but we shouldn't need him to start every game in Scotland.
Always seems one of these guys who looks after himself and players nowadays can play well play 35 if they are disciplined enough. He will adapt his game but I don't think he's going anywhere soon -

I don't think most of the players we have now will be with us when McGregor steps down. Especially the ones that would be able to step up to be captain.

If AJ’s still here by the time Callum either retires or slows down enough to lose a starting place, then it’s an open-and-shut case.
If not, could possibly see McCowan step up.
