Youngsters go down 2-1 to Hibs in the development league which probably kills off their chances of retaining the championship at that level this season.

CELTIC'S Development Side saw their seven-match unbeaten run come to and end following a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Hibernian.

Oli Shaw put the hosts ahead after three minutes, and Celtic had to wait until midway through the second-half to find an equaliser thanks to Jack Aitchison's precise finish.

But as the young Hoops attemped to complete the turnaround, it was the Edinburgh side who grabbed a late winner through Fraser Murray.

Fresh from a call-up to the first-team last weekend, goalkeeper Conor Hazard was back for the Bhoys in one of three changes made by Tommy McIntyre from the team that dispatched Hibernian 3-0 at Lennoxtown last week. Along with Hazard, Jack Aitchison and Theo Archibald came into the team while Ross Doohan, Kerr McInroy and Ewan Henderson dropped to the bench.

It was a frenetic start to the match at the Oriam, as the hosts got the game underway and put the young Hoops under immediate pressure.

Within three minutes, Shaw handed Hibs the lead, the striker’s powerful right-footed shot going beyond Hazard and finding the far corner.

Celtic went on the hunt for an immediate response but the Hibs defence proved resolute. Josh Kerr had a great opportunity to equalise from a corner lofted in by Mikey Johnston, but the defender couldn’t keep his header on target.

Archibald, Miller and Aitchison all asked questions of the Hibs backline, but they couldn’t find a way through

Regan Hendry’s long-range shot, which rattled the woodwork, was as close as Tommy McIntyre’s side came to a goal in the first half.

At the other end, Hazard came to his team’s rescue on a couple of occasions, producing outstanding saves to deny Callum Donaldson and Alex Harris, leaving the young Celts trailing 1-0 at the interval.

McIntyre made one change during for the start of the second-half as Kerr McInroy entered the fray in place of Aidan McIlduff as the young Hoops had noticeably upped the tempo as they continued their quest for an equaliser.

Miller came close with an impressive shot from 30 yards which flew inches past the top corner, while Hendry looked to have won a penalty for the young Celts on the hour mark after being felled in the box only for the referee to wave play on.

After a sustained spell of pressure Aitchison fired Celtic level in the 69th minute. The striker lifted his head and pulled the trigger just inside the box and his accurate shot beat Dabrowski.

Encouraged by their equaliser, the youths went in search for a winner but it was Easter Road side who would have the last word as Murray found the net in the final 10 minutes.

And with the clock against them, McIntyre’s side were unable to salvage something from the match as the hosts held on for maximum reward.

BRENTFORD are trying to tie up a deal to land Celtic kid Theo Archibald.

The attacking midfielder, 19, has been on loan at Albion Rovers since January.

But he attracted attention playing for the Hoops’ under-age and development teams earlier this term and netted a stunning strike against Manchester City in the UEFA Youth League.

SunSport understands that helped bring the Bees to the table and advanced talks are believed to have taken place between the clubs over a switch for the Scotland youth star.

It’s thought the English Championship club could offer Archibald a three-year deal.

Isn't that letting a potentially decent player leave prematurely/cheaply? Although tbf not completely sure how good the lad is.

Mikey Johnstone has been moved to training with the first team and told if he keeps the standards going he'll get a chance after the Huns games.

Boys been outstanding recently. Really think he could be top drawer if he develops properly.

Aitchison and a couple of others have been training with the first team for the last few weeks. Hope they all get a chance instead of players who have no future here.

TOMMY McIntyre had made three changes from the Celtic Development Side which was narrowly defeated by Hibernian on Tuesday for today’s Glasgow derby meeting with Rangers.

Logan Bailly comes in to start between the sticks for the Bhoys, while Anthony Ralston and Kerr McInroy are also restored to the team for the closed-doors league clash at Cappielow. Conor Hazard, Aidan McIlduff and Theo Archibald are the players to drop out
