The Celtic Song ... There can be only one !
I can recall it being sung in the 60's when my older brother used to take me. I even recall the green and white scarves being called "walk on scarves"

I am sure read somewhere we sang it first or that Gerry Marsden heard us sing it first, something like that anyhoos as stated we do it better.

I heard that we sang it first in 1957 as it came over the tannoy, and we held our scarves up, it might have been the League Cup Final. Gerry Marsden then sang it in 1963, making it famous for scousers, and they subsequently stole it and made it theres!

Celtic did indeed sing YNWA first.

BTW during the great war it was Celtic that were known as 'the hun' because they always won the league.

The original song was from a tv show or opening of a show before Gerry and the pacemakers sang it which in turn made Liverpool adopt it as there own song. We sing it better then that mob anyway. They also say we stole just can't get enough from them as they sang it first when Suarez joined them, despite us singing it before he had signed for them :smiley-laughing002:

The answer is, there is no answer.

Search the internet from top to bottom and ask a million people - no one can say with any authority who sang it first. It's not as if there is a known date in history we can say we sang it and they can say they sang it, it's all pure guesswork from sketchy sources. Most of which were drunk the majority of the time.

Whats the earliest video "evidence" of us singing it? Is there any from the 70s?

There is video evidence of Liverpool fans singing it in 1964, where as although theres loads of us singing it from 1980 forward, I dont think ive ever seen us singing it in the 70s at all before on a video.

As far as I'm aware, it was played in the late 50s at Celtic Park and at Old Trafford, but it was at Anfield in the 60s where it really took off as a mass anthem.
