If it had been a choice between MON and Lenny then only a complete lunatic would turn MON down. However, if I was Lenny I would not accept another period of 2nd fiddle to a successful Celtic manager of the past. He has been there and done that.

All in all though I hate the wave of rose tinted nostalgia for the MON period that for some reason has gathered around Lenny. Lenny if anything would have done his managerial learning under WGS more and in financial terms he is more in WGS than MON territory. MON probably realises he should never return because he will never come back to a situation where he had inherited a Henke, Lambo, Lubo, Stan.Jackie etc and could go out and buy 4 good EPL players and other established internationalists too.

Its a completely different world and to be honest MON really was poor at finding new 1st pick players on less money in his last few seasons with us (not including loans). So, I am not sure he would be the man for the job in getting huge success out of modest cheap. lower paid players. That was WGS's talent and that will be a more useful model to Lenny than MON's period.

If lenny fails us then theres a slight chance we might be seeing MON again in the future, I guess. But I wouldn't count on him ever taking a role as director of football or the board just throwing lenny out now and taking on O'Neill.. Its just not going to happen.

I'm just trying to stay as upbeat and positive about Lenny as I can, and I really think he can win us the league this year. And if he does, will, he's here to stay for awhile.

O'Neill was one of the best and most passionate managers we have ever had.But i wonder if he started at Celtic this season instead of in 2000.He was quite lucky he inherited larsson and he built a team around him these days he wouldnt be able to get guys like thompson sutton hartson because teams like stoke west ham etc would over wages.Thats and advantage we had 10 years we could offer bigger wages but now to that barstrard abaramovic you got clubs like paying bullard 60k a weel

a big reason MON came here was probably Larsson. we don't currently have anything close to a larsson. we couldn't get any big name managers to talk to us about the job this offseason.

of course we have to back lenny.. he is at celtic for the foreseeable furure. but to not explore the possibility of MON as a director of football is just stupid. he is a celtic great, we would be lucky to have him back

If somebody said to me last year, you can have Lennon or O'Neill as manager.....O'Neill wins.

when Mon was at Celtic, he had all the help he needed money wise, and he at the end of his tenure still bleed us dry, and to add to it he knew he had to give up his job for his wife, but was not long and taking up his new post in the world cup commentating pundit then management, i believe he held out for 5 million from our club before he was paid off, also he handed out bumper pay deals weeks before he was gone

My thoughts exactly! Great when we had him here but he did leave our club in a helluva state! Strachan done a fantastic job to rescue us and win us the league in his first season! I'd love to know if O'Neill could do the same job that Strachan done with his budget! Strachan got us to the last 16 of the CL 2 years in a row!

I love MON but he had a great set of players when he was in charge so for that reason I dont think he could perform miracles this time around.

As much as I like MON I wouldn't take him back. The reason we lost the league in his last season, team wasn't fit enough. We see this at all his clubs. Aston Villa, for example, have tired out near the end of there season for a couple of years now, causing them to go on a bad run of form. As BostonGeorge said, he left the team in a state.

I wouldn't have him as Director of Football either. Lennon, Thompson and Myalby have all played under MON. I think Lennon would look up to him constantly, and it wouldn't really be his decisions.

Not really. Jock Stein was a far better manager than MON is/will ever be.

No. Wouldn't have him back. He wouldn't come bak in Director of Footbal. He is a manager, with his own management team. What would we have -

    O'Neill - Director of footbal
Robertson - Assistant director of football
Walford - 2nd assistant Director of football

Think it would relly undermine Lennon. He has to be his own man. Make his own mistakes. Not have a former Celtic manager looking over his shoulder keeping him right
