Maybe so. I don't think too many England fans are overly bothered either way whether or not they are liked.

But its fairly standard for football fans is it not - Why is it that more fans turn up at Hampden to watch Spain or Argentina than turn up to watch Estonia or Luxembourg? We all feel an extra degree of excitement seeing our nations play against the better teams in international football.

What do you want me to say? Should I lie and say that football fans in England really are gripped and intrigued by the views that fans and media in neighbouring nations hold? :97:

:smiley-laughing002: I try to post without any enmity or hostility, so am fairly sure I've dont nothing to rile you into responding like that :87:

That's not the way the Englishman on this forum act. In any case, the arrogance is also a reason why the English cannot produce talent on par with Germany, Italy, Spain, Argentina, etc. When you have a headline describing the group as Easy, when the players and fans go in with a sense of entitlement thinking "why do we even have to play Algeria, Slovenia, and the US?" then that's where you fail.

When's the last time Estonia or Luxembourg qualified for the World Cup?

But with arrogance, which rubs people the wrong way. As an American, it's a bit rich for an Englishman to talk about how that group was underwhelming when you couldn't even top it. Your level of entitlement does not match the level of talent your nation produces. The incongruity rubs people the wrong way.

    1. Meh. I don't want you to say anything. But you have, and you will.

    2. You must have a very low anger threshold indeed if you think my post was a "riled" one.

    3. Mental peppering your post with so many smilies.

Also, it should be said, the narrative of the English being disappointed at that group didn't arise until after they failed to win it. They were actually excited as, like most other large powers, an easy group should mean progression to the latter stages. I'd be hard pressed to find an Argentine who would want a group of Nigeria-England-Sweden over US-Slovenia-Algeria.

Maybe, however, this is finally a sign of English fans realizing their place in the world, and that their enjoyment can only come from glamor ties instead of from actually doing well int he competition.

I actually don't think Americans are as arrogant as advertized. Ignorant, childish, immature? Yeah. But most Americans are too uninformed about anything to be arrogant.

Why is it arrogant to see Argentina, Sweden and Nigeria as more exciting fixtures than the US, Algeria and Slovenia?

How does it suggest I feel in any way "entitled" (to something you haven't specified) to see Argentina, Sweden and Nigeria as more exciting fixtures than the US, Algeria and Slovenia?

    Please, answer me these questions.

So what that we didn't top the group in 2010 - what point are you trying to make there? We were terrible, lacking any real pace or cohesion in attack and defensively we looked very insecure. We were poor and deserved to go out in the round of 16 as we did/ I'm happy to admit that. It doesn't negate the fact that Algeria is not the most exciting of international fixtures.

You never phrased it in that way, the arrogance comes from your labeling of those fixtures as "underwhelming." It's arrogant, in my view, to label any fixture in the World Cup as underwhelming. I think you feel entitled to the "entertaining" matches of the World Cup despite the fact that you have struggled mightily against "underwhelming" competition. If you had cruised through the group 3-0-0 with 12 goals for, 0 against, yeah that'd be underwhelming. But how can anything be underwhelming if you struggle? Never did I state that you're arrogant for thinking that Argentina is more exciting than the US. I felt the same way about England as opposed to Slovenia. But just because one was more entertaining than the other does not mean I'll disparage the other.

Stated above, that it is arrogant to call opposition underwhelming if you can't even win all the games.
