'There is one Celtic employee that seems immune to wage restraint, namely the chief executive, who trousered just under £1 million for the second year in a row. This included a £400,000 bonus payment, even though his contractual maximum bonus payment should be 60% of his salary of £525,000, i.e. £315,000. Happily for Mr. Lawwell, the Remuneration Committee decided to make an additional bonus award on an ex gratia basis. While he is no doubt very good at his job, this does seem a bit steep, when the rest of the wage bill is under so much pressure.'

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this.

I think Lawwell deserves his wage for the job he does, financially wise. There's a reason Arsenal were after him, he's * good at what he does.

Doesn't mean he doesn't need to shape up in other areas though.

    Interesting read that article.

We really are a unique club with how we perform given our strange situation and financial constraints.

As I said in the VVD thread, we really are a giant club in a straight jacket with our face pressed against a glass ceiling.
    .
Kinda frustrating but what can you do?

Those kind of wages are vital to champions league success

what we should be really doing is trimming the 1st team squad right down getting rid of all deadwood who eat up wages. WE must waste at 70k per week on wages for players we don't need.
Trim the squad save those wages, bring in promising youths to be in the squad and buy a few players in the 3-5m bracket knowing it only a transfer fee that's involved as the spare wages cover it.
Or look at some better players who are free transfers no fee involved and those wages cover the term of contract.
It isnt hard in theory. But putting It into practice is another thing.

If we get ourselves into the Group Stage this year then it's possible we may spend that kind of figure but even then.

I imagine we would already have the team we're looking to have for the season ahead by then so the money we gain from the CL will just likely sit in the bank.

Hopefully we actually spend it on the squad though.

Kennedy in the Mail tomorrow saying we are good enough and can go into the champions league qualifiers with what we've got.

Exactly don't like the way him and Collins have been talking I do think we are strong enough for this round and maybe the next, playoff is a different beast though.

Boyata bought with last years budget it looks like as our accounting period ends on 30th June. Pukki sold cancel out a 1/3 of what we paid for Boyata.

Fans will become disgruntled again if the same happens like Maribor last season

Disagree. I think he does a great job, but his remuneration is way over what it should be for a company with a turnover c60m. Especially one where the actual success of the company relies on other employees. Whether he grows the club's merchandising by 2% a year, it pales compared to getting into the CL. I wouldn't be surprised if he trousers more than RD and for his job spec, that's too much.

CEO is the only area at our club where we pay EPL salaries.

Good post. As much as i deride Lawwell however i do think that he is a good money man and we will never be in trouble under his watch.

    A few points though:
    -He is paid too much
-His hands are all over the first team
-His stubbornness has cost us good players
-Tells far too many tall tales
-Possibly lacks the balls to take us up a notch

I really don't think he meddles in the team at all. I think he understands our financial position better than anyone, so i have no problems him being stubborn on us spending within our means (he ain't keeping the profits). I think it is only natural for the manager and scouting team, when told they have x amount, you can take a big gamble on 1 player or hedge the bets and buy 2 or 3, to take the latter option.

If, for example, we'd spunked our entire budget on Finbo last summer like a lot of folk wanted, and he'd had a minger like he had in Spain this year, the manager would be sacked.

But really, i'd be interested to know if any CEO in the EPL, or any other league, was earning the same as the established star players. The reason he never went to Arsenal was he knew he was on a good thing here, has DD'd full trust and a job (on a million a year) for life. He earns the same as some FTSE 100 CEOs earn...

    Behind what?

DD is an absentee landlord. I am sure that ultimately PL has to answer to the board of directors and main shareholders. Day to day though Lawwell is the bossman and very much the man in charge. I think he even owns 2.5% of the club as well.

Well we know that he sold Misser behind WGS back anyway. There is other rumours (some very recent) of similar situations. I also think that the Baxter situation was his baby. As well with Ronnys assistant shortlist. Lets say there has been times he has meddled with how our manager does his job. I agree with the Scottish assistant for Ronny btw but it is still a worrying precedent all the same.

John Kennedy basically coming out and saying we probably wont sign anyone , very hay with the squad and can get into the CL with what we have got , claimed GMS and Armstrong were "pencilled in "to be recruited this summer and not in January
