Dont get the arguement that he does a good deadball. He does but you cant just bring him on for a free kick. Its not much use having him on for free kicks if you have to suffer his defending. IMO, for all his flaws, Naylor was miles better than Mulgrew and showed at least he can defend at all levels, had a respectable career in England etc. Mulgrew has only ever impressed at deadballs. The rest of his game is barely SPL level.

You do realise how many goals he scores and creates Gunt?

He has been woeful defensively but he creates and score more than your average left winger never mind left back.

He has probs the best delivery in the spl.... he also scored 2 freekicks against us at parkhead... why people dont like him is beyond me he hasnt played many games give him a break he is still a young lad!! i would much rather he was in our team than against us.

what the f**k has the guy done wrong? absolutely nothing.

people are slating him entirely on the basis that he signed from Aberdeen. if he had come from Portugal or somewhere, and no-one knew who he was, they'd be saying he hadn't done badly.

because he hasn't done badly. he's been pretty good actually.

he's slow as *, gets beaten off the ball every time down the field, can't tackle, his delivery is average, no composure with the ball, just punts the ball to the opposing keeper. he's * brutal, GTF. he's had a chance and blew it

Naylor was constantly exposed badly in Europe the way Mulgrew was against Braga. Though Naylor coped in the SPL, Mulgrew looks like he will be of a similar standard except with a better attacking output. We should still seek a better left back though.

He'll play 99% of his games against SPL opposition, and he'll be fine in those games. He's getting caught out against higher level opposition. He'll need to improve his positioning significantly to be of any use on a higher stage.

hes too slow to be of any use at a higher level. he's an aberdeen LB, no idea why he was brought in except that he was free and the board was hopin he'd work out so they wouldn't have to spend money. good thing we bought 10 midfielders and haven't sold one

Say what you wish about him but that's a bare faced lie. We keep hearing about how Ki and Maloney hit an excellent free kick, compared to Mulgrews they are both terrible.

His free kicks are placed right on the 6 yard line where the striker should be attacking and the keeper has to decide to come or stay. Best dead ball player in the SPL.

:50: thats the real reason we signed him, dead balls. with a good delivery you could score 10-15 extra goals, which could be the difference between winning and loosing.

Hopefully he was signed as back-up, he can deliver one * of s set-piece but his defensive frailties are clear for all to see...simply he aint good enough!!!

That's bullshit and you know it!!

I dont rate the guy as he clearly cant defend but that comment is a bare faced lie...Mulgrew has probably the best delivery in the SPL!!!

Hope he doesn't cost us they 10 to 15 goals defensively!

I never really paid too much attention to Mulgrew- but what I have seen so far this boy will cost us goals- he just is not tight enough for a full back!
Willing to be proven wrong! But we have been down this raod before?

From what I've seen of his games so far he doesn't seem to spot an early pass and is slow at releasing the ball which means he either gets closed down and just hits a hopeful ball forward or the pass he was intending to play is a waste because his team mate has a man on by then.. Looks a bit lethargic like he could do with extra help down his side and I was surprised Ki was given the job of helping him out untill Murphy started dropping deeper to track back which wasn't much help either... As others have said , we won't get torn a new one by teams like Arsenal every week in the SPL where he might just be good enough , and his height will probably be more of an advantage defending against teams that like to play the high ball.. His set pieces have been okay..

Give the lad a chance to show what he can do , I reckon he will do a good job for us in the coming season certainly has ability and with guys like Thommo on the sidelines giving him guidance he can only get beeter .

Mulgrew will readily admit he was never a defender he was forced there by Celtic themselves Kenny Mc Dowall late in his previous stint with Celtic second team. He is left or central midfield player, He played midfield for Scotland under 21's two years and did great. He was for last eight games for Aberdeen played at Central defender again not by choice and they had 4 shut outs and four defeats by one goal. He has also been left exposed a lot of the time by experimenting with various left sided mid players e.g Murphy, ledley. Samaras, Maloney, all different styles of players etc and against top class opposition. And then we murder him for some early jitter errors and then we all get on the bandwagon. Celtic Team supporters we call ourselves. I predict he will come good for us when we settle and we will all change our initial reaction opinions. Let the coaching staff get the team settled then lets make individual player judgements. Every team Mulgrew has been with (excluding Wolves where he never got chance due to injury) have wanted to resign him on longer more lucrative contracts Southend, Aberdeen, He was also very close signing with an agreement in place for a championship team. But his heart is with Celtic he is a Celtic Bhoy. so Lets be a little more positicve with all our Celtic players, too early to kill anyone off.

he had one good delivery on the goal by sammy, other than that he was pish. his corners were average and several other free kicks went directly into the keeper's hands. we have to be realistic about things here and think about what he can do over the entire season and i'm not ready to declare him a magnificent crosser of the ball or free kick specialist for what he did in a friendly against lyon's 3rd team defence. bottom line is that he'll be responsible for more goals being scored against us than setting up goals we score
