Like many I was skepitcal when he signed, I was well aware that he was good at set pieces but also well aware that he has massive trouble defending. I went on a chat forum and got talking to a Aberdeen season ticket holder (so he says) and he told me that out of the Aberdeen back 4 Mulgrew was the main weak link and he even went on to say that if it hadn't been for his set pieces he might not have made it as a footballer. I took this with a pinch of salt, I thought he could be a bit bitter about him leaving.

Incredibly, he looks to be absolutely spot on. In the 2 games (Not including friendly's or emirates cup) he has been completely shown up to be a complete dud as a defender.

Teams are attacking us down the left side and are getting complete 100% success! Braga knew from the 1st game he was the weaklink and attacked him down that side.

How long will it be if not already before the spl teams also change their gameplan so the winger is constantly taking on Mulgrew? Last night to sum him up lets the ball go out for a throw, no danger, last second he decides to attempt to keep it in play and runs it out!!!! Then I think they won a free kick because of this and he was a very lucky boy to get away with that.

People talk about his set pieces and how that reason alone should justify a starting place, lets be generous and say he scores 7 goals from a direct free kick and assists 10? From free kicks, how many goals is he going to cost us?

I hope Lenny like all of us has recoginsed this (you cant fail to notice it) and gets a new LB asap beause if he is our number 1 choice for the LB we are in deep deep trouble.

Everytime I see him defending, my heart is in my mouth, he has only played what 5 games for us including friendlys? I actually dont rate Naylor but even he is a better option surely.

Am I being over harsh or do you also believe he could cost us dearly? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

The boy has been shown up for what he is...an Aberdeen class player.

Hopefully this start to his new Celtic career has been a learning curve for him, and he will get the head down and work hard at the parts of his game of which he is a liabilty.

IMO brown was better than Ledley last night. This boy needs to raise his game to secure a midfield spot.

Unfair criticism imo. Charlie is a good footballer and i think he should play LM instead of Maloney. Im glad we signed him he will be a good addition to the squad if he cant be a regular starter. And at left back hes on the same level as fox and naylor

Fortune changed the game when he came on last night :97:

And Mulgrew is dreadful. There should be no place for sentiment in that dressing room. If they're playing *, they should get dropped.

The sooner Mulgrew, Brown and Loovens are dropped, the better. Surely we all can't be wrong?

this has been a very bad signing for us and i think he will fade away again and ultimately be transferred. defending is not his thing and just because he can take a freekick doesnt merit playing the rest of the game with 10 men. braga targetted mulgrew last night and believe me so will evry team in the spl

juarez and ledley can take free kicks and they contribute in the rest of the game also

I personally would start the new season with Joe Ledley at left back Brown and Juarez in the cm. Thats if we dont get a lb in before then it would be criminal to always play Joe there but lets be honest Charlie Mulgrew is never a Celtic class player...

I'm not a huge fan but to say he offers nothing is a bit over the top. He crossed a great ball in with his right peg in the first braga match, the one where brown made a right roaring * of it even though he was offside.

His assist against Lyon and again last night he whipped in a couple of good corners and another good cross with his right.

He has produced more goal scoring opportunities than maybe anyone else in the team in the last few matches.

Still badly lacking defensively right enough

Naylor was showing some signs of improvement when he got a little run at the end. He was fairly solid. Why didn't we offer him a 1 year contract and take it from there?

^ because his time was finished, he's ageing and past his best.

you wouldn't be saying that if Mulgrew had performed better defensively so hopefully we all won't be looking back when we buy a new LB

But Lennon has said we're after another LB. Let it happen man !

Naylor was ok, but his time here was done.
