I'm talking about the profile of the club. I know that squad wise, you're not exactly the best in Europe.

In world football, it's still a massive club. If Hughes wants a challenge, a crack at Europe and has long-term ambition, this job would be ideal.

The only downside I think is that the second CL place has been taken away from Scotland. In the past, you could argue that the Celtic job was a guarantee of managing in the CL (or at least qualifiers). From next year you have to win the SPL to even get into the qualifiers.

But still, the experience of managing a club like Celtic must be a massive draw. It's certainly a top-10 job in the UK. And I don't see many other top-10 clubs ready to dispense with their managers and offer Hughes a job.

Whoever takes the job needs the full backing of the board and allowed to bring in who he wants and not just have th board impose players on him.

Danny Fox and Ki were imposed on TM. He wanted to keep Heid but the board sold him. He wanted to buy Alves from Middlesbrough but was told that teh money wasnt there but the money that was spent on Fortune, as his 2nd choice, and Fox was more than what Alves was going to cost.

Things like this dont help as the fans see everything as the managers fault and it isnt all down to him. Although the way the team was lined up was prob all down to him!!

My first choice would be Mark Hughes. He has a pretty good manager record, he has European competition experience. I would say he would be the obvious first choice.

    Good call :icon_mrgreen:

It says in The Mail that Hughes has been approached and is 'intrigued' by the offer. :celt_2:

CELTIC have placed Mark Hughes at the top of their list of potential replacements for sacked Tony Mowbray.

The Parkhead club ended the Englishman’s nine-month reign as manager yesterday following Wednesday night’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to St Mirren.

Reserve team coach Neil Lennon has been placed in charge for the remainder of the season, with Swedish fans’ favourite Johan Mjallby set to assist.

Sportsmail has learned, however, that tentative contact has already been established with former Manchester City, Blackburn and Wales manager Hughes with regard to a permanent appointment.

And despite offers from West Ham and an opportunity to lead the Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup finals, the Welshman is said to be intrigued by the prospect of a switch to the SPL from next season.

Keen to land a major Premiership job, the 46-year-old has already rejected advances from Hull City, Bolton, plus the Turkish and Israeli football associations. If a major English club fails to make an offer, however, then Hughes will give the Celtic post serious consideration. Norwich manager Paul Lambert, Alan

Curbishley and Portsmouth’s Avram Grant will join a raft of names to be mentioned in the coming months, despite Lennon being handed the opportunity to capture the Scottish Cup.

Mowbray’s swift departure was followed by those of assistant Mark Venus and coach Peter Grant. A 13th defeat of the season in embarrassing circumstances in Paisley prompted a conclusion to weeks of speculation.

His match statistics were the worst of any Celtic manager in the 112-year history of the club, despite the arrival of 14 new players over two transfer windows and the £65,000-a-week capture of Robbie Keane on loan.

Celtic chairman John Reid said in a statement: ‘On behalf of the board and everyone at Celtic, I would like to offer Tony Mowbray my thanks and sincere best wishes for the future.

If we could temp Mark Hughes here i think he would be fantastic he has a excellent track record and he has worked under budgets before and he is very canny within the transfer market . He did a fantastic job at Blackburn and got the best out of some very average players he also got them Santa Cruz for less than we paid for the Donkey that is Marco Fortune .

I'd love mark hughes to get the job but can see him going to west ham, Think David O'learly could be a dark horse here.....

I'd love to see Mark Hughes as manager. Reckon he'd do a brilliant job for us.

i dunno, they are utterly skint and flirting with relegation once again not as attractive as chasing albeit, the SPL and competing in Europe is it?

    Levein (wouldn't come prob).

i don't think any established EPL manager is going to come to Scotland right now.
