Don't say that. There will be an argument put forward for why we should be going for him next.

Never underestimate the pull of this club. Despite the depression and surrender that has engulfed our support we should always try to lure the best. Our target should be to win a European trophy within the next five years probably through a third place CL finish and a mental cup run in the Uefa Cup. That is one * of a challenge and a good football man might be up for it. I do realize that if we spoke to his agent we might be knocked back within the hour but if that happens you pick up the phone and move on. Always start at the top.

Well obviously there'd be * who manage teams in the Scottish Championship who'd be happy with that! The "good enough" point should have been assumed! :smiley-laughing002:

Going by what Keane said about the board approaching him it seems that they overestimate the pull of this club.

I don't think the problem is the pull of the club and even were we to offer good wages to a manger the biggest problem would be the constraints he must work under. It must be so frustrating to see the club make huge profits on the likes of Vic and rake in huge wads of cash from the CL and be given no extra cash to improve the team.

We can all surmise, but someone who was actually told the job was theirs if they wanted it has gone on record saying that the club offered him a paltry salary and a restrictive contract, believing, as he put it, that "They were playing the part - 'It's Celtic' - you should almost go up there for nothing".

Hiring a manager and attaching a load of conditional bells and whistles like the fact that he has to take a Norwegian apprentice on is never the way to hire a proper manager. The fact that Keane turned us down paradoxically shows that he was a good pick for the job as he was able to say no to Lawwell. For the record I am not sure I would want him at the minute but if we gave Martin a 5 year deal and Keane came with him with a view to taking the job after the 10 is in the bag, I could get behind that.

Trying to explain a winning mentality to someone who lacks it is like trying to describe what a face looks like to someone who's blind. Why not try to get him? The worst thing that can happen is that he rejects the contract.

I am not saying this is not true. Hypothetically if we decided to offer a manager more money and we got a decent manager to come and maybe take a little less hoping to be remembered as a guy who put our once great club back on its feet. One look at the financial restrictions involved would make him realize how difficult a job it is and have him run for the hills.

In other words clear the hurdle of managers wages and we have an even bigger hurdle in front.

I think when it boils right down to it, the only way we get a manager with a proven track record and who can be considered "Celtic class" is if we look to offer the kind of cash Lennon was on before he left.

That means around £1 million per season, with a decent bonus for Champions League qualification.

Since when has Rafa Benitez had a winning mentality? Valencia 14 years ago, aye, probably.

    *'s a * hero in Europe though:smiley-laughing002:

Rafa's the type of manager who would lose us the league but get us through to the quarter finals in the Champions League :56:

If Lennon come back, he would be working under the same restrictions that seen him leave in the first place. He obviously didn't fancy it then, so why would he fancy the challenge now? If he felt he could take us further, he would have still been here, simple as that.

Interesting scenario. I wonder how many would settle for this with the provision it was not Sevco that took the league

Or else his frustrations boiled over and he left and the grass is looking a lot greener now after the problems he's had at Bolton?

I think we would have to change the restrictions if we wanted Lenny back. I don't think though that it would have to be a huge sea change.
