I know. Good to know his legal training had at least one transferable skill.

Lawwell will lie if he has to, of that I have no doubt. However, because Lawwell is a very smart man and lies have a habit of coming back and biting you on the *, I'm equally confident that he will only lie if he has to. This is an interview Celtic chose to give instead of the usual PR press release and he was unusually clear and explicit in stating that there are no favoured candidates. Either he's suddenly become an idiot and started lying when he doesn't have to, he's telling the truth, or he's being kept out of the loop.

There's only one circumstance I can think of where a smart man like Lawwell would choose to lie about this: if it really is true that Keane is part of a move on DD's part to curtail Lawwell's influence at the club and that statement was Lawwell's way of using the media to fight his corner. It's a fascinating possibility, but I don't know enough about how boardroom politics work to judge how likely it is. Perhaps some of our members with their own businesses or who are company directors can fill us in on whether that possibility is realistic or fanciful.

For the moment, I see no reason to think that Lawwell wasn't telling the truth.

I am not saying he was lying. However to not answer the "leading candidate" question or deflect it would be tantamount to confirming it. Being the leading candidate or not will not preclude RK from getting the job so were it not to be true it is unlikely to come out. Whatever the situation I believe PL could only answer that question in one way. So for me I take this answer with a pinch of salt.

I also think it very plausible the the whole Keane thing is a smokescreen and behind the scenes we are trying to put in place a new manager away from the glare of the media.

Yes but you're missing the point that Lawwell chose to give this interview. It'd have been so easy to release the usual bullshit statement. Lawwell either lied or he didn't. I honestly doubt he was lying.

    Roy Keane? No thanks!

Moyes, MacKay or Laudrup for me.

Peter Lawwell was almost obliged to say "there is no leading candidate". If he had stood there and said Roy Keane is the leading candidate and then negotiations with Keane fell through, it would leave our next manager(whoever he may be) exposed as a second choice. Everyone would know he wasn't the man the Celtic board really wanted.

We made that mistake back in 2009 when it became common knowledge that the board wanted Owen Coyle but we ended up with Tony Mowbray. I think Lawwell is just very keen to ensure that we don't fall into that trap again so he's telling the world there is still a list of 5-10 candidates when in reality they will be much further down the road of knowing who they want than that.

You are most likely right. I believe PL did give this interview for a purpose.

As a possible scenario PL wants to give Keane the job. Keane is unsure and making up his mind. PL has other irons in the fire and wants to calm the media speculation regarding Keane as a racing certainty to keep these others interested. If Keane gets the job PL can say it was not decided until after the interview.

By nature I am a very skeptical person and will always explore even the most unlikely possibilities.

I like Roy Keane's presence and he will certainly hold authority in the dressing room. There's no doubt he will get the respect of the players and fans but I just don't know enough of his footballing brain to see where he could take us.

What was his football like at Sunderland?

Really? Using the media to do what you can do with a simple phone call strikes me as uncharacteristically clumsy and risky for a man as intelligent and successful as Lawwell. Above all, I would have thought our board would want to individually manage what information each individual candidate and also the shareholders and the fans recieve. The media stike me as a very blunt instrument for that purpose. Still, I guess it isn't completely impossible.

Yes but as I say, he ddn't have to give that interview. There's no way on earth a man as smart as Lawwell wouldn't have seen that coming. The only conclusion you can draw is that Lawwell (and most likely the whole board) wanted the information that there was no preferred candidate out there and the simplest explanation for that is that it's the truth.

Would be happy if it's Keane- the other realistic candidates just don't capture the imagination.
