He is good player that can fill a bunch of different roles, which makes him a great player to have for routation squad. Celtic play a lot of games each season and to have good back up players is essential when half of our squad is tired.

C Mulgrew is the perfect type of player for this role.

We're gonna have the height advantage at set pieces and corner kicks, no matter where he plays you'd want him on the park to supply the crosses. The further up the park, the more dangerous those crosses are gonna be.

Corner kicks should bring a lot of goals and with Commons and Mulgrew we've got firepower on both sides.

Most teams have two or three big guys up for corner kicks, that are hard to deal with.
We might have 6, 7 or 8. Then it's about the quality in the delivery and that's where Mulgrew can really make the difference.

He would be better playing at LM with Izaguirre behind him than at LB where he gets caught out for pace regularly.

His set pieces are vital for us in Europe.Would love to see something like this next season (if Wanyama goes)

    FF
    Van Dijk.Wilson.Mulgrew.
    Matthews.Izzy.
    Brown.Ledley.
    Commons.
    Balde.Hooper.

It depends on how we play. I don't get why people are saying Wilson and Mulgrew is our best centre back pairing. They haven't played there together very often and when they do, neither looks comfortable. Wilson prefers playing as a left sided centre back, and Mulgrew prefers to play as a 'sweeper', behind a centre back who will attack everything in the air, which Wilson isn't. Last season Ambrose and Wilson was our most played centre back pairing and after that it was Mulgrew and Rogne. Van Dijk is a right sided centre back so it would appear that he will be first choice there and Mulgrew and Wilson will fight it out for the left sided spot.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us lining up to something similar to this:

    Forster

    Matthews/Lustig Van Dijk Wilson Izaguirre

    Mulgrew
    Brown Ledley

    Commons
    Hooper Balde/Samaras

With this, especially when Samaras doesn't play, there will be space for the full backs to push on, leaving Mulgrew to drop back and provide cover for Izzy, but step out and start attacks when on the ball.

In Europe the midfield is likely to be similar but with Samaras dropping to left mid.

I still think he is best deployed at centre half. His technical ability is good enough for central midfield but he slows down the play too much compared to someone like Ledley and completely lacks the pace to play out wide. Centre of defence allows him the time he needs to really take advantage of his pin point left foot.

Although he could fill the anchor man role of a 3/5 man midfield than Wanyama normally takes.

I find that a remarkable comment.

Have a quick look at UEFA's website for a start, where he was near the top of the assist table for the Champions League. Have we EVER had that before ?

I think some people he never played that well last season cause he was moved about, but look at the assits ect from him, plus he was not played at center half most of the year. And the season before got player of the year with playing there the most. It's not his fault he was moved.

Great player to have in the side. would love him to get another run at center half just seen how good he was towards the end of last season at center half as well when Efe was dropped.

Been thinking about this recently, one of our best players who has been immense for 3 seasons in a row. Think he would be class in a back 3, hope to see him more at CB this season thought he was particularly good there in Lennon's 2nd season in charge when you won various player of the year awards.

I love him, but I thought he looked a bit out of his depth and nervous in the CL last year.

Better pushed forward for me than in defence.

True, but off the top of my head, 2 were corners (Benfica / Barca) and one was a free kick (nou camp).

Deadly at set pieces, but I think he had some poor performances and looked uncomfortable on the ball, maybe just a bit of nerves and inexperience, I remember him having similar problems when he just came back to Celtic.

People don't appreciate the little things he brings in Europe. Obviously his bundle of assists are a massive bonus.

However what about him balancing the midfield out, playing that central/left midfield role which allows Samaras to have a free role ? Adding extra height - he's arguably the best player we have in the air ? And flexibility - he can slot into left back, central defence, central midfield or the left of midfield at any time in a game, giving Lennon the option of a change in formation.

No. Sammy is definitely better - could argue that both Ambrose and Lustig are stronger.

I know what you are talking about but his ability on the ball also shone through when the ball was in play, it was his excellent pass through to Hooper that got the man sent off in Spartak Moscow. Him and Scott Brown were absolutely brilliant at home against Benfica. If Sammy and Hooper were fit that game we would have won it.

Away against Benfica he was sloppy, as were the rest of the team. Some of the time against Barca he was the same but he made some crucial interceptions and held the ball well when he needed to.

He needs to get fitter if he's playing in midfield though beccause towards the end of the matches he was noticeably flagging more than the rest of the players.

Most of our big moments last season Charlie was involved in. From the first game against Helsinborg, where he took responsibility from centre back to run up the pitch with the ball, to the right wing and cross it in for Ledley to score.

He continually provides a threat in Europe. Teams must be terrified of his dead ball.

Was it before the Juventus games, he had contributed exactly 50% of our European goals through either a goal or assist ? That's not to mention the part he played in goals without having the actual assist - such as the initial cross for Forrest's goal against Spartak.
