i think it is more that we a club would look to emulate the best clubs of belgium and to a lesser extent holland, considering that neither have the financial clout of the big 5 leagues and have arguable regressed like our league. We have beaten the best sides of these leagues in recent years, and their was not much between us and ajax last season.

will just need to see next season where we are at in relation to european teams, as like i said either would be incredible, but I would never want to feel like we need to take a reality check about matching the anderlechts, Besiktas and ajaxs of this world, we are their equals as among the biggest sides of the non big 5 league.

Bmg were unlucky against shalke I was convinced they would make the final I'm no saying ajax and lyon or anyone else in El are crap on the contrary they are very good but I'd like to think so are celtic on their day and especially in cup football were having good home record comes in handy

That's the reality of the champions league it's aided for teams with money and until it changes or we get more finances to compete with the big big guns I'm talking same level of money as Bayern juventus etc practically impossible unless we join another league or we could get really lucky

I think what we have most going for us heading into qualification/Europe is that we're finishing the season strong and playing good football, that BR is obviously leaps and bounds ahead of RD both tactically and in man management (which is particularly obvious given how even some players who were good under RD, like Boyata, are even better under BR) so I won't be surprised if our existing players continue to get even better - and last but certainly not least - we still have everyone we're going to get in the summer transfer window. And it sounds like BR might get to splash some cash.

All those give me a lot of confidence that we are going to be better than last year.

Just to be clear, I was certainly not referring to you (or aliceinsound) in my post - I was responding to certain comments from some other players while trying to emphasize the difficulty of even EL. I just don't think it's nearly as easy to navigate the knockout rounds, whether EL or CL, as some are saying or at least implying. Of course, I've love to be proven wrong.

Wales and Northern Ireland get qualification spots too.

Just looking through the qualifying process and the teams involved, and it does look very unlikely that we'd be 3rd seeds, should we qualify.
I might be reading into it wrong but it seems like we'll have to hope for a lot of upsets in the qualifiers. Probably would require at least 4 out of the following teams to lose; Liverpool, Seville, Kiev, Olympiacis, Napoli, Ajax.
Anybody else have a better idea of how it might work now that most of the league's have wrapped up?

As things stand just now, getting to Pot 3 would require at least 2 teams ranked above us to be knocked out in qualifying.

Best case scenario if leagues finish as they are is for Ajax to win the Europa League. If they do, we'd still need 2 of Dynamo Kyiv, Seville, Liverpool, Napoli and Olympiakos to be knocked out.

However, if Man Utd win the EL, we'd need 3 of Dynamo Kyiv, Ajax, Seville, Liverpool, Napoli and Olympiakos to be knocked out.

The only league still to finish that can affect things as they are is the Turkish league. But that would require Besiktas to throw away a 4 point lead with just 2 to play. Even if it happened, and Istanbul Basaksehir won in Turkey, we'd still need 2 of Sevilla, Napoli, Dynamo Kyiv, Liverpool, Besiktas and Olympiakos to be knocked out.

Keep in mind that the unseeded teams in the non-champions route will probably contain Nice, Hoffenheim, Sporting Lisbon, CSKA Moscow, Plzen and PAOK. And that Olympiakos were knocked out of qualifying this season. So there is a chance.

Surely an upset or 2 isn't completely unlikely - in our favour. Can imagine Lisbon CSKA and Nice could all put out Kyiv, Besiktas, Sevilla on their days.

The new coefficient system doesn't kick in until the 18/19 season. The only change is that we'll no longer have 20% of the scottish coefficient added to the points we earn ourselves, as with the current system.

Cheers mate, that actually doesn't sound so far fetched.
Can definitely see one or two upsets there.
Let's just hope we qualify first anyway, even if we are 4th seeds again I can see us giving any team a good game on our day.
