Well, when there are two spots in Central Midfield and you hold the attacking one for the majority of the season, thats to be expected of you isn't it?

Okay, I expected a stout defence of Brown on here, but c'mon, at least please be realistic. We will be doing well to reach the CL for a start.

When did he play attacking midfield?

He plays as part of a 2man centre midfield, I have never seen any team play two centre-mids and have one of them as an attacking midfielder it would be asking for trouble, especially our midfield where we played with wingers.

I think Scott Brown is the best defensive midfielder and best attacking midfielder in the League, he's 'box-to-box' and it's why he's so good I think like Patrik Vieira or Roy Keane's style. He can play all roles to a good standard as is worth much more than £7m especially to English teams where guys like Palacios, Bentley and Valencia are worth £16m+

Not too sure, there is so much to work on in my opinion. Thats why I reckon we'd be better offloading him and working with someone who at least has the core elements there.

He's not as good as some people make out but you would also have to consider who could we get in that's better than him for that money while remembering the difficulties involved in attracting quality players to the SPL?

I'd keep him unless a totally unbelievable offer came in for him.

Well I'd say keep him for at least another season, he can do well in the SPL and hopefully we'll see an improvement in his play under Mowbray. If not, sell him.

yeah i agree tbh i think his price is worth the sell right now cuz he doesn't really add goals nor is he a great playmaker, although i think he is one of the best engine midfielders out there running and tackling. but that only gets you so far and i thought one of our biggest problems last year was not enough goals from midfield and relying on our strikers too much. when our midfielders did score we had games like that 7-0 with a naka hat trick and a crosas bomb.

i digress, i think engine room midfielders are easier to come by than playmakers, so we should sell the high priced tackler to get a high priced goal scorer.

    In your third paragraph apparently

Really? Have you never seen the likes of Scholes, Fabregas, Gerrard, Lampard to name some prominent examples.

Let's be fair, it's the SPL, there isn't much in the way of competition.
I'll give him his due's, he's athletic, tracks back and generally works hard.
The players you have quoted (one a winger) moved at a premium for several reasons, one of which is that they moved within the same league. As such will be regarded as being able to hurt the club selling them, ergo, more cash required.

Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all play 3 centre midfielders or with 1/3 forwards. Gerrard, Fabregas, Lampard and Scholes have never played in the centre of a 4-4-2. Gerrard and Lampard especially play in an advanced role behind 1 striker and could be classed more as a second striker rather than a centre mid as they dont have any defensive duties at all.

Liverpool would NEVER put Gerrard in the middle with Alonso or Mascherano and play another striker in a 4-4-2 and if they did Gerrard wouldn't score half the goals he does now. Same with Lampard, Scholes or Fabregas. When Scholes scored a lot of goals a few seasons ago he played in the same role as Gerrard/Lampard do now not in the middle of the park.

You cant expect a centre-mid playing in a 4-4-2 with wingers to be scoring 15+ goals a season like a Lampard or Gerrard because they need to do defensive and attacking duties, they have no cover and no playmaker ahead of them. The only midfielders who play in the middle of the park and score 10+ goals a season are ones who play in an attacking position ahead of 2 other centre-mids who play in behind them like Zidane, Riquelme, Gerrard, Lampard, Deco, Diego, Ballack when he played for Bayern, Petrov when we had him.

I never said he played in attacking midfield in my 3rd paragraph.

    We play in the SPL.

I see your a bit up your own * with your footballing opinions mate, your trying your wee footballing purist philosophy too downgrade Broony, Bet i suppose your right and everyone else is overrating the bhoy

I mean some of things your saying i can see your point but your being way too critical of one of our best players have a go at someone like Samaras aye but someone who's heart and sole goes into every game and gives a good performance consistantly no!

Whats the big deal hating on him anyway all youv seemed to do in most of your posts a wee dig, yes his passing and vision isnt up to the standards of someone like Naka but i would still say 70% of the time his passing is good enough and occasionally very good.

I dont know how you can claim he isnt a good tackler if you watched him regularly this season he has put in some great challenges and his tackling has improved no end not too mention he is prodominantly a attack minded midfielder has good dribbling, quick, nice one two's, decent passer, great work ethic, versatile these are some of the assets of his game you overlook. Well if you think we should get rid of him for 10 million then fair play thats a decent opinion but i would rather keep a hold of him as he can improve plent and irreplaceable in todays market.

I think anyone who cares to check will find that they all have.

Yes, they have moved into second striker roles recently, however this only reflects a small portion of their careers.

Exactly, and this is why we won't be able to command a fee as large as those of the other players mentioned.

Neil Lennon was a holding centre mid and nothing more, 10 goals in 96 appearances from a box to box midfielder is very poor, you have to admit that? Craig Burley and Stan Petrov were scoring 10 goals in half a season not 2 full seasons and against top opposition not just in CIS cup games.

I think he can and should improve but speaking of him in terms of a double up on the initial investment is very tempting even allowing for the fact trying to replace him would be extremely difficult.

Craig Burley and Stan Petrov weren't playing in a 4-4-2.

Burley and Petrov both played as attacking midfielders and we're 10-12 goal a season players in that role.

Burley played ahead of Weighorst and Lambert, Petrov played ahead of Lambert and Lennon.

If Burley was partnering Lambert alone in a 4-4-2 formation he wouldn't have scored anywhere near the amount of goals he did, he took penalties aswell as his chances would have been slimmed down as he couldn't always have been forward because he had to also make sure he was defending. Same if Petrov spent his whole career playing in a 4-4-2 beside Lennon or Lambert probably would have been lucky to score half the goals as he could never have got forward as much.

No one at all really ever, obviously sometimes it will occur but rarely anyone playing in the middle of a 4-4-2 formation will score 10 or more goals in a season.

brown was asked to play a little deeper by wgs so wasnt played in as advanced a role as he was with hibs now we have to see if mowbray plays it differently but he is a good player in my eyes and was close to being player of the yar last year . What about a player playing as an attacker getting more goals for instance mcgeady how many does he score ? not enough is the answer and maybe if he stopped trying to beat the same player over and over he would have more time to score

You're getting stuck in a quagmire of formations and systems, at the end of the day ask Gordon Strachan and ask Scott Brown if they are/were happy with the goal return from him and they'd say no, it's on record from the both of them. There are goals in him they just aren't coming yet.

They aren't coming because he isn't played to get them.

He scored 7 goals last season, was the highest scoring centre-mid in Scotland(Andy Dorman played in a more advanced role behind a striker like Gerrard).

I would only judge his goal return if we were playing him in a position were it was expected of him, like next season if we played a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 nor much differance between them and used him as an attacking midfielder ahead of two other centre-mids who sat in behind him like Crosas and a defensive midfielder for example this N'Guemo we're being linked with and he only scored 5 goals a season then i'd say he wasn't doing the business in that role but if we were to play him there I would say he'd score 10 easily.

If we were to sell Brown and sign as this guy who wrote the thread says "a playmaker" obviously talking about a player similar to Nakamura and paired them with Robson or Crosas in the middle and played the same 4-4-2 again they wouldn't score 10+ goals either because they would never be allowed the freedom to attack.

    Eh?

Heart and soul in every performance should really be the minimum expected from every professional player, don't you think? I don't see why this should be used to mask the inability of being able to pass a football to a teammate.

Whats with the "hating" nonsense? I've never said I hate or even mildly dislike the guy.

We'll just have to disagree on the tackling and passing, I reckon his tackling style in the main is harrying the opponent, and hoping he makes a mistake before the ref blows his whistle for a foul. I'm not saying he's without some decent attributes, but I just fail to see a £7M+ player when I watch him play, so on that basis, i'd take the cash and reinvest.
