    Maldini > Thuram > Nesta > Cannavaro > Desailly

Sorry, mate. I just can't put Nesta ahead of Thuram, Thuram was unbelievable.

Nesta was the most complete modern centre back I’ve seen. Thuram was the best defensive RB I’ve seen.

Like Maldini, Thuram was an absolute monster at both FB and CB. Nesta was better with the ball at his feet, which is more important these says, and a wonderful defender in his own right; but for me Thuram was insanely good.

However I'm going on the game as it was then. In the modern game where CB's have to be ball players, perhaps an argument could be made that Nesta just pips him due to that.

I don't watch much football these days, only Celtic; but from what I hear there are no CB's as good as any of these guys defensively nowadays.

    Caesar, not Cesar.

Nesta was a better reader of the game too. And I’d agree that no current defender is close to these guys.

McNeill’s book spells it as “Caesar” on the cover.

He was nicknamed Cesar because they said he looked like the actor Cesar Romero.

Thats weird since according to previous books he took his nickname from Cesar Romero the actor.

I don't know why that happened, however it is well known that authors don't always get to choose the titles (and a few other things like covers) of their own books. Perhaps that could explain it.

John Collins talking about Rodgers rejecting the chance to sign van Dijk for Liverpool for 12m.
"Gary McAllister was the assistant to Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and I told him I hope you’re going to come and take Virgil but Brendan didn’t fancy him and didn’t think he was better than what he already had. ‘He would’ve cost around £12m – every team watched him regularly but the worry was he was showing it against Scottish players but you could tell he was strong, powerful and a well balanced player."

I remember Brendan himself saying he wanted Virgil but the board at Liverpool weren’t willing to pay that much.
