Can't help but think that's bullshit. Bought for £12 million, dominates in his first year in the Premier League. Signs new contract, and they insert a buyout clause of only £25 million? With the amount of money shelled out on players in England these days, I highly doubt that Southampton settled for that low of a clause. A highly rated CB, Dutch international with UCL experience will easily fetch £40 million. I doubt they inserted that low of a valuation on their own player.

 

The buy out doesn't have to be the max paid, it can be higher, especially if more than one team are in it for him.

Does anyone have any proof that we have a sell on clause in the deal ? Also i always thought the sell on clause only kicked in after the 12 million they paid for him. which means if they sell for 40 million we would get 10 percent or what ever the percentage is of 28 million which is still 2.8 million which is not bad.

 

Nah wanyama went for less than we sold for yet we got 10% still.

 

Why on earth would anyone pay more? If it is in his contract, then say 8 teams want him, they all big 25mill and they all get to enter contract negotiations. It is then up to Virgil to make the demands and get the 8 teams to make a bidding war over his contract.
Southampton have a contractual agreement to accept any and all bids of 25m, if its in.

Southampton have been one of the most transfer savvy clubs in the world, over the past decade.

If they've allowed VVD to have a £25m buy out clause, then someone at the club needs a stern talking to.

 

There's a video of his highlights and the comments are full of prem team fans wanting him signed. He's a very gifted player.

I was always dubious when they sold Wanyama to a bigger club for less than the paid us. If Van Dijk goes for £25m would it be wrong to be concerned that transfer fees are being played down to save on sell on fees?

 

May be wrong, but I think Wanyama was coming into his last contracted year, and with no intention of signing an extension, the fee was heavily reduced.

 

Reading tweets about Van Dijk there, funny how its the exact same stuff we said about him when he was here...

It's actually a little upsetting just how much better Van Dijk is than the rest of our team.

I'd honestly say he's in the top 4 or 5 defenders in the world, never mind top 10.

 

That's an interesting question actually, there's a bit of a lack of what I'd think are top defenders these days.

 

Definitely mate, there's a real shortage of top class defenders in the game just now.

None of the top 4 in England have world class defences, Barca don't, though I like Umtiti and think he'll be class in the future. Madrid have a slightly stronger defence but nothing special. PSG have the best defenders(imo) but don't do much.

I would say Virgil is in most of all these players brackets, but how many is he better than?

 

Most of them Benatia, Varane, Luiz, Mascherano, Kompany, Barzagli Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Koscielny and Terry for sure.

The best about for me are Godin, Bonucci, Chiellini, Thiago Silva, Hummels, Boateng, Ramos, Pepe, Pique and Van Dijk. Would just come down to what style you wanted.
