Does anyone think Ajax being knocked out will up his profile in Netherlands if we qualify, and therefore get him into the dutch team? Not sure that'll be enough to keep him, but it won't hurt...

If we get to the group stages of the CL and he performance admirably (i.e we don't get hammered) I'm sure the Dutch coaching staff will take notice.

Agree with the 1st part, not the 2nd. If we qualify I'd give him a 50:50 chance of staying for the group stage, if we don't he's gone for sure. If we got out of group/good europa draw for 3rd place he might stay past Christmas window, but i doubt it - we'd be the ones pushing the sale at that stage.

    Just my opinion mind...

In that case i hope we have secured a quality replacement before that time comes. Otherwise it will be very tense to see wether we acquire an adequete replacement. And at that, we will probably pay over the odds as the selling team can play hardball due to the circumstances. They know we need to buy, they know they need to buy if the sale goes ahead.

No chance we are signing a centre half before any potential move.

We do that then we've surrendered him, the tactic is fairly clear. We've told the world we don't need nor want to sell. That equates to, if you want him then stump up the big bucks to get him.

Exactly which is why we need to leave ourselves enough time to bring in another player. Id imagine if potential buyers leave it too late, we will hold onto him until the Jan window.
I cant see us turning down £10m. But like anyone else i hope we get as much as possible. Iv got every faith in Pistol Pete.

I genuinely feel as if he fancies a crack at the Champions League with us.

He can leave next Summer for 7 million after a European campaign.

We can turn down £10m if we get into the Champions League. If we don't, I doubt we can afford to knock back the money. Tbh, I think if we fail to get into the UCL, Van Dijk will be sold and the money used to cover ourselves for the rest of the season. I can only see some of it being freed to sign a cheap replacement, maybe even in January.

It's just the weird position we are in in modern football.

He'll stay for the CL Group Stages. Score a few goals against Real Madrid then be sold in January to Man Utd for £20m.

    * it. :smiley-laughing002:

I agree and I hope your right.

But would we get 7million for him next summer when he's only got a year left on his contract. He could sign on a free 5 months later on a pre contract with another club in January.

Spot on, if we get into the CL Virgil will stay until at least January and hopefully he has some good performances in Europe to raise his price tag a bit. If we fail to qualify for the CL he'll be sold to compensate not getting the £15m+ for qualifying and we'll probably accept around £10m for him.

He's played 19 games in two seasons for Forest.

Seems to have gotten seriously injury prone/out of form.

What a world we live in when SWANSEA can spend eight million on a player ...

I love Ronny's comments on English media's rumour of us being offered a bit of £7m.

Nae chance pal. Double it, then we're talking.
