    We don't know that though.

What we do know is that Deila spent a fairly long time assessing the current squad before he even mentioned the idea of looking at players.

I'm more inclined to believe that he's left it a bit late himself rather than him slapping a list of positions needing filled on Lawell's desk only for Pete to file it at the bottom of the "to do" pile.

He identified, and said on the 3rd of July that we needed wingers. Now, if he knew then that we needed wingers, I'm going to hazard a guess that he had a fairly good idea of what else was required. If we as fans could see we needed a striker, to suggest Deila couldn't, would be insulting the man's footballing intelligence I feel. I don't think it's been left late on his part at all, I just think it's a case of the board not wanting to part with a penny. As I said, with Pete confirming about every penny being reinvested, I look forward to the next window.

There's the small matter of a contract that he signed.

Look, I know it's in vogue to bash the board and Lawwell, but I refuse to believe that Deila was standing at his office door every morning clutching a list of players he wanted only for Lawwell to stall him and hide behind his secretaries desk in order to avoid him.

One thing we know about the board is that they know business, and they know profit. Why the * would they deliberately refuse to invest in the team (when they've done it every season up until now!) and risk the chance of Champions League football? They know the money that's to be made from getting into the group stages as well as we do.

I honestly believe that Deila has been slow off the mark to identify what he needs. I also believe there's something bigger going on behind the scenes as far as moving players out en masse and bringing in new talent.

Yeah, they usually don't get in the way of a player getting his way these days.

Which is entirely down to us.

    We cannot let him go.

Unless we can convince him to stay, then he'll be on his way contract or not.

I hear and understand what you're saying but have you ever managed a Team of guys where one of them really believes that opportunity is knocking at his door however for whatever reason, it's been decided he's staying. I have and it's a constant nightmare not just with the lad himself but with the Team. We 'sold' the idea of young guys coming to us and we would showcase their talents with a view to moving on to bigger and better things, eg Vic & VVD, and when push comes to shove, we say....ah but that's not what we meant.

I completely understand your point, but for me, sell him and move on.

Don't get me wrong, if Deila can sit down with him and talk him into the idea that another year (or even until January) with us is his best option then I'll be delighted.

I just don't want a player in our squad who deems himself to be being held here against his will. That kind of player isn't good for our squad.

The board want to get into the Champions League by spending as little as possible. We seen that last year. We went into the Karagandy game not fully prepared then either in my opinion. We still required a striker then, and we still require one now. However, we managed to scrape through, but we played with fire, there is no question about that in my opinion. We done similar this season, with a poorer squad than last year, and we got burned. It might be easy to bash the board (although I feel it's very much justified right now), but it's also just as easy to simply blame Deila for being slow to see what we required.

I've actually noticed a shift since Lawwell's statement the other day, in regards to who is at the forefront of people's minds about who is to blame for the mess. It would appear that Lawwell has talked his way out of any blame for some people.

For me, it speaks volumes about what is going on behind the scenes, when Neil Lennon would rather sit unemployed than manage Glasgow Celtic. When it became clear he didn't have another job to go to, the alarm bells should have been ringing.

Can people not bump this thread unless there is actual news of him potentially going, please.

Bumping a thread :smiley-laughing002:. This thread could also be about VVD staying. Although the cynical view is that VVD has his bags packed and has been at Sports Direct today deciding on a Southampton or Sunderland top (allegedly :56:)

Lets face it he wants to go but even Lawell knows that if we sell him now there will be mutiny amongst the Celtic support especially now that we've * up the signing of Scepovic.

When VVD came here for CL football he also knew there was a chance of failing and not getting any CL football.
He also had plenty to do with that failing so he owes us as much as the club owes him anything.

If celtic let him go after only one year into a 4 year contract then it tell anyone thinking of coming here that they can go after one year if they make enough noise, and its hard enough getting them to stay as it is.

We have let enough players come to us and not stood in their way after a fair amount of time had passed they moved on.

    Good post :50:

Was caught in two minds wether we should just let him go or not and be done with it. Fully agree with the above though.
