Look at what David O'Leary did to leeds and where thay are now.
A manager can make or break a club.
Bad manager and over spending will kill a club.

The landscape of English Football has changed immeasurably since 2003. Leeds United were in a Champions League semi final two years earlier for * sake!

Southampton are operating closer to their glass ceiling than you might like to admit.

Which helps highlight the successful clubs are not set in stone indefinitely.

There isn't much difference between Saints in 14th and West Brom in 8th.

The jump to the top 7 probably requires overtaking Everton which I don't think is beyond the realms of possibility.

Breaking into the top 6 or top 4 would be extremely difficult. But that is the Liebherr's aim.

30k+ averages whilst in a relegation battle show the fanbase is there, an expanded St Mary's would help and that is the plan. If they can average 30k+ in the bottom half, what could they do in the top half in a bigger and better stadium?

I just hope we get the money soon and we get some top class players in. Whatever happens at Southampton is their problem. We just need to add some new guys to enhance our chances on the counter attack.

West Brom analogy reinforces my point. Similar sized club overachieving for a season. I fully West Brom to be fighting for survival next year.

Spend the money on improving our youth academy , bring in better coaches. That's what I think the money should be spent on.

They have a smaller fanbase, smaller stadium, training ground not as good, weaker academy and can't compete with Southampton in the transfer market.

8 points, so not alot when you consider Southampton were in League 1 in 2011. Saints are quickly catching them up and will overtake them relatively soon.

How many places? 6 was it?

Is that not pure and utter failure?

Why? Southampton had successive promotions from League One to the Premier League, that left them having to put together a Premier League squad very quickly.

To then be only 8 points behind West Brom as a newly promoted club isn't poor, West Brom have had longer to build a Premier League side. Southampton are catching them up and quickly.

I don't think it's poor but if I thought all of te above that you have said I would view it as abject failure.

Southampton do have scope to be regulars in the top half.

West brom over achieved last season and wont be the same this year.

Plus anyone who knows how good Pocchetino is will know he is a far better manager than Steve Clarke

If after signing Lovren, Wanyama and a decent striker they come 14th again in 2013/14, then yes that would be failure. They aren't selling the club to players like Wanyama and Lovren on the basis they are aiming to be happy with mid-table to mere survival.

No, they're selling the club by offering a lot of money.

Total conjecture given their short managerial careers to date.

The only reason players are going is because of the money Ted. Can't you see that. Gaston Ramirez had the choice between Spurs and Southampton. What do you think swayed his mind? I wouldn't imagine it will have been the coastal view.

Wanyama is going because he is going to be pocketing more cash. He is taking a step backwards in joining Southampton.

If you were being objective about it, its a good move for Vic and for Tic.

He will almost be guaranteed a place in a team which will give him a platform to showcase his talents. If he can prove he can handle the various levels of the EPL, he will get his move to a bigger club quite sharpish.
For Celtic, they got very good money, and got rid of him before he became totally disillusioned, possibly affecting his value.

Wages of course are a major factor. But lets say for example Crystal Palace wanted Wanyama, they will more than likely be in a relegation scrap as their squad needs a huge amount of work even if Wanyama signed, would Wanyama want that?

Southampton next season should be looking for a top half finish and maybe success in the cups. Especially if the incoming players doesn't stop at Wanyama and some of the other targets come in.

Tomorrow Luke Shaw will sign a 5 year deal at Southampton. If he wanted money he could sign for any of the big clubs in England. Southampton are reported to be offering him a £25k p/w deal when he turns 18, but also selling Shaw the vision of where they see the club and other players like Wanyama they will bring in.
