Think he is a cracking player but no where near the finished article - still looks very immature at points. He probably is worth £12.5 million at the moment (maybe not in EPL land but definitely in the wider footballing landscape). For me, I believe he is replaceable, its not as if we are finding a new Messi or Ronaldo. Don't get me wrong it will be hard, however he is replaceable.

As many have said, the guy probably grew up in poverty stricken, squalor conditions. Nearly every African player we know, attempts to make as much money as possible, do you think these guys give a * if they are labelled 'mercenaries'? They may be, however they have to be, they have experienced poverty we will never know and obviously want to provide not just for them or even for just their partner and kids - they want to provide for every family member - extended and all!

Not to mention, a footballers career is limited - he could get injured at any point and have to retire, therefore guys like Wanyama want to earn as much as possible as soon as possible. He obviously doesn't have formal education and what would his chances be of being allowed to stay in the U.K. once he retires? Fact is, he needs to earn millions to secure his future and sustain the life that he has become accustomed to.

And....we all know how big a club like Celtic is, however Wanyama and the like won't, fact is, these guys probably only ever hear of Man United, Barca and Real, where they are from!

We are nothing more than a reference on his footballing C.V.

Shame he's gone but £12 million is very good business.

Southampton close to £12.5m deal for Celtic's Victor Wanyama

    • Transfer will set a new Scottish record
    • Midfielder likely to be unveiled on Friday

Southampton are putting the finishing touches to their £12.5m capture of Victor Wanyama from Celtic, which will represent a record transfer fee received by a Scottish club.
Wanyama, whom Celtic bought for £900,000 from the Belgian side Beerschot two years ago, had initially rebuffed the chance to move to St Mary's but speculated approaches from other Premier League sides never materialised.
Cardiff City were the only other club to lodge a bid for the Kenyan midfielder, which was rejected. Southampton plan to parade Wanyama as their latest capture on Friday after the player said his Celtic goodbyes on Thursday.
Wanyama had been removed from the Celtic squad for Tuesday night's 6-2 friendly loss to Greuther Fruth in Germany as he agreed the details of his long-term contract. The 22-year-old was one of Celtic's star performers as they reached the knockout phase of the Champions League last season but it was clear as soon as the campaign ended that Wanyama would move on.
Celtic could yet lose another of their most valuable playing assets, with Norwich City retaining a keen interest in the goalkeeper Fraser Forster. Should John Ruddy exit Norwich for Chelsea, Forster will feature prominently in the list of candidates to replace him.

Thats a 1388% increase in valuation, which is a 1200% (or round about) profit for Celtic :icon_mrgreen::icon_mrgreen::icon_mrgreen:

Celtic are the real winner$ here. :shamrock::smiley-laughing002:

Wouldn't call him a money grabber, obviously don't know him personally but he does not strike me as that kind of player. His agent(s) on the other hand well that is a different story. As a young African player he will have grown up dreaming of playing in the EPL and now he is set to realise that. If that means he also gets to earn a fantastic wage in the process then why * not?

People slating him for wanting to move down to a better league with better wages and a better chance of improving his career need to get a grip to be quite honest. Just because if you were in his position you would not leave here, obviously because you support this club, (you say that now but if a weekly pay check of £40k plus was waved in your face I'd like to see your answer then) there is no need to be bitter towards him.

:smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002: People need to see the bigger picture.

We have lost better players and moved on. Jesus, we recovered from losing Henrik, im sure we will survive without big Vic.

We will be laughing it all the way for years to come if we also invest this money wisely in some top signings to replace big vic and maybe hooper.

One would hope investment will take us to the group stage of the CL where we will get even more money. We can't lose wanyama and then think we have enough as it is.

Agree, I really hope we can use at least £4 million of it and invest it into the team. I know we have spent round about that already, however if we spend that bit more, we are set up well. If we are smart, we only need to spend £10 million every couple of years anyway (sounds mental when English clubs spend this on diddy players) in order to set up a good team.

As long as we are smart with our signings....

If a small portion of the fee is invested in a creative left winger then we are laughing.

Wish Vic all the best in his career, he was quality for us then netted us a fortune - we can't be angry about that.

Everyone is a winner here really, apart from maybe us fans, but thats yet to be seen.

Celtic get 12.5 million plus a percentage of next sale(hopefully). an £11.6 million profit.

Southampton get a potentially World Class midfielder for a decent price.

Wanyama, although missing out on CL, is stepping up in terms of League and finances.

Us fans? Well, it's yet to be seen whether we are winners from this. If we re-invest the money, then I'd say we're winners. But that's an If.

Will be interesting to watch him, see how much he improves playing against better players every week. He rapidly rose above anything he played against for us, in only about his 3rd game he played against Rennes mind and ripped the pish out of M'Vila who's manager had bummed him up to be Essien and Vieira rolled into one or some nonsence comment he made :56: maybe he was talking about big Vic actually.

Agree with everyone saying that this is a great piece of business re the buying fee, then selling fee. It's just so annoying that all it will take is 1 clip of him holding off a couple of midfielders of a top-half EPL club on MOTD and he will be getting touted about as £20-£25 mil in no time.

This is just reality. I am often annoyed by reality! :icon_mrgreen:

Annoys me mate, however the EPL is not reality, hence why European clubs never pay over the odds for EPL players because they know the real value of players.

Bet if Wanyama goes on to become a cracking player in England they will say it was down to Southampton and the EPL.

'Oh what a cracking player we have found' - i can hear it already. The arrogance and ignorance is nauseating.
