I dunno - either there's been a sudden upsurge in racist abuse at football games, or there's been a sudden upsurge in certain players suddenly detecting it.

Have to say statistical likelihood suggests the latter...

mario has been subjected to racial abuse on countless occasions. it was rife when he was at inter and he gets it regularly when he is on international duty

    So why is that? Coincidence?

"Countless occasions" seems to suggest not.

Given that the great majority of black players report no racist abuse, I'm stroking my chin on this one.
I'm tempted to suggest it's not much to do with the colour of his skin - he gets abuse because he is a *.

It was bearable with MON, and Strachan, Keane always has a good opinion aswell, but more often than not it is your standard English 'pundit' who can't see past the premiership. I only ever watch analysis when it's on Sky Sports, Neville is surprisingly very good, and I like Jamie Redknapp aswell. Despite how much of a * he is, Souness speaks sense and isn't afraid to rip into the English teams. Just a shame about Ray Wilkins :56:

probably because of his antics and he is the type of player that opposition fans love to hate. also it mostly happened in italy which is well known for its racist sections of support

    This is it.

And I think, if they were being honest, nearly all football fans would admit that their own club has had players of that type - love-to-hate players. Neil Lennon was one for us.

Opposing fans will always hurl insults at these players - and when they do, they don't just say "You bounder", "you *", "I don't like you" - they always add something that describes the players most obvious physical characteristic.

Neil Lennon - "ya ginger *"
Nacho Novo - "ya rat-faced baisturt"
Gordon Strachan - "ya wee *"
Kyle Lafferty - "ya lanky streak of *"

It just so happens we live in a society where it's considered perfectly acceptable to stereotype people by their hair-colour, height, build, physical features etc.

But stereotyping them by their skin colour has become almost a worse offence than physical assault.

I think comparing somebody to a monkey because of their skin color is worse than those above. Even worse than saying something like "black *" which would fit your list better.

in no way does that even begin to justify racism.

I mean...what the *! The 4 defenders cost about as much as the whole Ajax team together! And Ajax has a shitload of injured players, so I'm delighted about the way we played yesterday!

Gutted with the Athletic Bilbao result. Watched a * live-stream for them to defend like big maj. Still, an away goal is good. A 1-0 win at the San Mames will get them through - comical defending aside.

This the draw for the next round? That could be brilliant. FC Twente and Schalke go out and support each-others teams all the time.
