wat u have to remember is that seville was an event most european teams would want....but it is forgotten the next year....the only reason ppl remember is because they have seen the following we have, and rightly so!..But if we make it to the last 16 again then who knows?....celtic have always been super at the knockout stages..so HAY...HOOO.....why not this year....u lot know the score man! this team are beter on paper at least..lets see if we can do the talkin on the park..i reckon we have every chance!!!!!!!!!

Yea Martin, as I * pointed out in that post, Seville got 4.2M for winning the UC, we got 10.6M for the last 16. Still a HUGE gap.

The sheer joy of winning it, yea then the next season where we have to sell off our star players because some how, we're short, Oh yea but we won the UEFA cup but now we compete in the UCL with our "experienced team" but without our star players.

Its always good to win trophies, especially European ones. Of course it is. Again you have me saying stuff that shouldnt have to be said. I thought this was a gimme.

So you go off and be grateful that we could win a 2nd rate competition if we focussed on it. I'll be happy to compete at the highest level even if winning it is hard. What about the joy of winning the UCL?

As said, a match is never won on paper. So lets focus on beating the best because underdogs can win the UCL and we are getting into a good position to get further this year round.

Also I've noticed over other threads that you've been questioning my love for Celtic with your petty "I have been to more games than you" and "football is all about stats to you" remarks. Dont question my passion for Celtic, EVER. On TC nobody should question anyones reasons for supporting Celtic, we are all on equal terms and the fact that you've seen more games than me makes you luckier than me. If I had the opportunity I'd be there for every game screaming my lungs out, unfortunately I'm not that lucky.

Don't tell me to watch matches I attended and I won't have to point out that I don't need to watch them because I was there.

And please talk some * sense.

You don't rate "the sheer joy of winning it" ?

Get a life you geek. :87:

    EDIT

Are you seriously saying that you preferred and enjoyed more last season's European campaign than Seville ?

I really think some have become unreal since we got into the last 16. the last 16 ain't no achievement, for us perhaps, but laughable for other teams. I hardly doubt it we ever gonna reach the final or win an ucl. it's highly utopia.
I don't think we belong to the european elite. we ain't in the same class and some champs league money won't make the difference or decrease the gap much. they ain't in our league, not even in our world.
we have become arrogant and think the uefa cup is only for dog teams. valencia, sevilla, porto and even liverpool won it. they weren't "too hoity-toity" to take part in that competition. Let's say an ucl year gives us 7£ mio more, so what? we still should outbid the other spl teams easily and win the league comfortably.

an uefa cup triumph is realistic and a troph - a place in the last 16 or even 8 gives some cash, but it doesn't satisfy me, because in my eyes it's not a success.

I wouldn't mind finishing the cl group stage third and go for the uefa cup.

All you have to do is ask the 80,000+ that went to Seville if they'd rather have that again or last 16 of CL, I think I know the answer.

Money wise there is no comparison, but some are making the point about excitement and the overall journey.

Win Uefa cup. Some really quality teams in there last year.Werder Bremen - better than Celtic,Seville,Benfica,Shakthar, tottenham.Who is to say we could go on any kind of a run if we met one of those teams?

But hypothetically, rather Uefa cup than last 16.The last 8 of the champions league is were the real quality is,were you can say yeah,we ae doing alright here.I mean last season was good but we got embarrassed in Denmark and Lisbon, they could have hammered 5 or 6 by us.

If the choice is between winning the UEFA Cup which we have never done and getting to the last 16 then I take winning the UEFA Cup. Sure we would earn more money in the Champoions League but the reality is that extra few million isn't going to hardly make a bit of difference between us and the teams that reguarly make the later stages of the Champions League. The only way our financial position will dramatically change is if we were to move into the epl and that isn't on the cards.

But the joy of going all the way and winning the UEFA Cup that is something that is realistic and would be something I know would live with me the rest of my life. I could give a * if we would earn 6 million extra in the champions league by making the round of 16.

Having said all of the above I hope we can build on last season and make the it past the group stages of the Champions League again and maybe even reach the Quarter-finals this time. That would be just fantastic. But if we drop into the UEFA Cup and go on and win it I would be over the moon with that as well.

That's it in a nutshell. Winning the UEFA Cup would live with us for the rest of our lives, making the last 16 of CL, well that is not even close for me.

/quote/Financially, it isnt worth it. And to give our team the expierence wouldnt be worthwhile because we would probably have to sell our better players to balance the books because of the loss of income!/quote/

We obviously don't budget for reaching the Last 16 of the CL so the assumption that we would have to sell our better players is way over the top.
people are talking about the UEFA Cup as if winning it is a formality. There are 5 or 6 teams in there who would would easily knock us out

We do budget on getting to the group stages which is where the bulk of the prizemoney is earned. If we dont get that money, we dont get Donati's or Browns in the next summer

I also agree about your point about the difficulties in winning the UC.

Think you are wrong their , YES their are 5 or 6 good standard football teams in the UC. Yet i dont think the bremens or espanyols would EASILY knock us out as we have shown time and time again that we are no easy ticket

Hes not too far from the truth but as with any cup competition it is very very difficult for even the best teams to win. The teams arent a patch on the Cl teams but that does not by any means it is a walk in the park.

I've not been convinced by Celtic during pre season . EVERYBODY will tell you we still need 3-4 new players . When we get them in and stop playing people like Hartley and Zurawski i will feel much much more confident . The fact is were 1 week from the start of the season and still need these players in . Where are they ?

I agree with you. That's part of why winning the UEFA Cup while not on the same planet as the Champions League would still be such a great day and memory because it is still a very tough cup to win with some very good teams. Sevilla who have won the last 2 UEFA Cup's are a very very good side. While Werder Bremen who got upset by Espanyol in the semi-final last season are very good also.

For me I was looking at the question as not assuming we can just stroll through the UEFA Cup but more as if you are given the choice between winning the one and the last 16 in the other which would you take. So I was just looking at it from the hypothetical standpoint.

    wrong.

    doubt it.
you'd just moan that strachan is the manager. thats how you like to show your "support" for the club. by slating them.
