I’ve been watching some of those long form YouTube videos where the guys talk about old games.

It’s actually quite remarkable what people used to produce when you think about it.

For example, the LOTR tie-in games (which were fantastic) were produce within about a year of development and had to be perfect since the idea of patching a bug just wasn’t feasible. Genuinely quite remarkable.

I sometimes liken in to the Apollo missions in that the despite being from the past the competence shown by some professionals is really amazing.

I tend to only buy fifa and cod as digital games now just purely based on the fact as it allows me to complete it and trade it in if it's a game I'm not likely to go back to or play online

It’s true. Those games were pretty flawless, as were most classic games.

And people will say those games were more simple, easier to make… but its all relative.

As technology advances the industry should and it just hasn’t.

It also makes games effectively useless in the future because once servers go down how do you get a patch to fix those game breaking bugs?

The programmers worked awful hours. I spoke to someone who worked on a movie tie in, the deadline was so strict him and colleagues were basically living in their workplace because they were working 16 hour days.
Games are so complex now that simple things can make the gameplay poor. Developers also often have to write complex stories, and make that playable within the game.

I'm not interested in this gamepass thing it's just another way of ripping off the customer, I never buy games like that, however it is true that the industry is trying to move in that direction. * you can hardly find a PC that comes with a dvd rom drive now they are trying to get rid of them.
Slim Xbox is trying to remove the bluray drive.
I have to be honest and say that games these days are so bad compared what they used to be, couldn't tell you the last time I actually saw a game I liked, never mind bought.
Now they are re-releasing sam & max, max payne 1 & 2, Tomb Raider 1,2 & 3, no originality and no doubt will all be digital with no dvd. So wait the way it works is you have to pay for a game you bought and played years ago then buy it all over again in digital format. buy the same game twice... what a rip off.
So for these reasons alone I will not buy digital.
If everyone else is happy with it fine but it's not for me.

I buy digital if it's cheap in a sale, I've bought some games for a few quid, bought a couple of others because people bought me vouchers. I don't really understand buying full price digital, usually someone like game collection sell it cheaper.

I’ve been playing through the Yakuza and Like a Dragon games and even though they are on gamepass for free I still bought them physical because you never know when they will leave the service. Bonus if I get bored of the games or don’t need them anymore they will always have some sort of value

So the new assassins creed game has a shelf life because of an online requirement to install. That means that once the game either gets pulled due to a license or some other issues with Ubisoft then it’s lost forever. Bleak future for right to repair and right to ownership going forward.

Best way around this is not buying any trash like this and it comes down to the argument again. If buying isn’t owning then pirating isn’t stealing.

Lots of games are like that now. It's similar to buying something off Amazon video. You can buy it but they may be forced to take it off their servers.
I bought a kindle book years ago. That edition was gone and a new version on. I had a new kindle and couldn't download it to the new one. So I downloaded a pdf of the book and put it on. I'd bought the book on kindle and physical. I felt no guilt.
