Dario Silva. Had to have his leg amputated after suffering a car accident when he was at Portsmouth. He had 49 caps for Uruguay.

Ronaldo comes to mind first. A lot of other great players was ruined through injury though, Owen, Van Basten, King etc

    Stiliyan Petrov.

Antonio Puerta & Marc Vivien Foe sadly didn't get the choice to retire like the players mentioned.

A death caused by injury is relevant though.

Plus death cuts short a career..........

I never said they were, but it is a result of a serious underlying problem. You could include Muamba in this as well, and he is fortunate to be alive.

That was a fair tackle. I thought he made the most of it in all honesty.

Andres Escobar took 6 bullets when he was murdered, it would be extremely churlish and inapropriate to bring him into a discussion on players who broke x bone or tore x ligament and never played again, just as it's inappropriate to bring the likes of Foe and Puerta into the discussion.

There is a difference, both players I mentioned died whilst playing football. So it was an underlying issue that caused the deaths of these players. Escobar didn't have any underlying problems (that we know of).

Offend? Who said anything about someone being offended? :56:

It's simply churlish, inappropriate and irrelevant. Surely you can see that?

(Me, a member of the 'offended' brigade? What a strange notion)

They weren't 'ruined by injury', they died as a result of an underlying health condition.

If you want to discuss footballers whose careers were cut short by death, start a thread.

You said it was churlish (thank goodness for Google:87:) and inappropriate - I assume you mention this because it involves talk of people's deaths? I also assumed you thought that might have offended/upset people?

And, where did I mention you? I said "who the * would it offend"? If not you, then you have nothing to be flabbergasted about.

Somebody getting shot 6 times was probably injured before they panned it.

Would you include Muamba in this thread? Or Stiliyan Petrov? They had serious health problems, they just happened to be a few of the lucky ones that pull through. The two players I mentioned unfortunately didn't recover. If a health problem is classed as an injury, which I would in this thread, then these players effectively had their careers ended by a health problem that then resulted in death.

    Ronaldo, Owen, Woodgate, Hargreaves, Recoba.

Remember a striker called Luc Nillis having his career ended at Aston Villa by injury. He was meant to be quite highly rated. Martin Laursen had to retire early there as well.
