Tony Watt has revealed his "need" to get back into the Scotland set-up ahead of the final 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The 23-year-old Charlton forward made his debut for Gordon Strachan's side as a late substitute in a 1-0 friendly win over the Czech Republic in Prague in March 2016.

However, in his next game he sustained a groin injury playing on loan for Blackburn, which kept him out of the rest of the campaign.

The former Celtic player was loaned out to Hearts at the start of last term before returning to Charlton in January, and slipped out Strachan's plans.

But, watching Scotland draw 2-2 with England at Hampden Park on Saturday - a result which kept alive hopes of reaching Russia - reminded Watt of his desire to re-engage with the national side, who have four crucial Group F qualifiers before the end of the year.

In Glasgow to publicise his new film review website, www.watttowatch.co.uk, he said: "On Saturday I was thinking I need to get back there.

"After my international debut I played four minutes in my next game before I ripped my groin, so how is that for luck?

"I know I can get there. I know I was pushing at the doors.

"Last season was just a bump in the road, in my eyes.

"I might not have had the best of seasons, but after an injury you are bound to take a dip.

"I have rectified that this summer by not taking as long a break and getting myself as fit as possible, because last summer I never had that. I missed the first three weeks training, so I was behind by maybe six or seven weeks.

"I know I can get there - it is just about me showing people.

"I love proving people wrong and so hopefully I can do it.

"I need to set myself a target. If I can be involved in one of those qualifying squads then I can kick on.

"I am 23, I am still a young guy and I have a lot ahead of me."

Watt enjoyed Saturday's dramatic match against the Auld Enemy where two great free-kicks from Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths overturned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's opener before Three Lions skipper Harry Kane levelled in stoppage time.

He said: "I am not a jealous person, or bitter person - I am happy. I would rather see the good in someone than the bad.

"I was buzzing for Griff when he scored the goals. I am still good friends with James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew, I was buzzing at 2-1 and was sad when it was 2-2.

"The gaffer showed faith in me as well so I was buzzing for him at 2-1 and even at 2-2 because that is an amazing result.

"The gaffer has called me up a few times so I know I need to show him what I can do and hopefully he is there for a long time so I can do that."

Watt was enthusiastic about his new website, which gives him an interest outside football.

"I don't want to be going home after training and thinking about football all the time," he said. "It is about finding a balance

"I want to test myself to see if I can create something that is a success. I don't want to be known as a footballer and that's all he can do. I want to see if I can turn it into a success."

Fair play to him for trying to develop his more cultural side with this new website. Whether he succeeds or not, that's nice to see.

As much as I've criticised him, would still like to see the * buckle down.

At 23, he still has talent to forge a decent career.

Fair play to the guy. Sharing a genuine interest in movies with fellow fans, something different from a footballer.

Maybe dropping down to a * level to bang in a load of goals is something that would do him good now? Dundee United desperately need a striker and a hero for the fans to get behind. You could easily see him scoring 20+ in the Scottish Championship if properly focused. Something like that would be a good move and confidence builder for him imo.
