    Nice work, Alex. :50:

I'm just keeping busy cycling and playing team sports...keeping me in nice nick. Tempted to join a gym and start beefing up a little more, but not hasty to do so.

anyone on here every tried their hand at yoga? its meant to do a lot of non-visible good to your body. i know some footballers do it and its apparently a big part of a lot of nfl players routines. considering taking it up for a while and seeing what the fuss is all about.

At the moment I'm really skinny, but with a bit of a beer belly thing going on as well.

My plan is: buy protein shakes, do sit-ups daily, lift dumbell as often as is necessary.

My questions: What exercises should I do with the dumbell to target different areas? How often should I do these exercises? Are sit-ups effective for gaining abdominal muscles/losing belly fat?

I'd join the gym but I can't afford it at this moment in time, do you think I'll be able to achieve what I need to with the equipment I have (one single dumbell)?

    Cheers.

dont drink protein shakes if you dont need to, and by the sounds of what youre doing then you dont need it. otherwise the excess protein will just turn to fat.

tbh, one dumbbell isnt going to do very much at all. how heavy is it? with only one you should be looking at bicep curls, tricep extensions, lateral/front raises, bent over row, shoulder shrug and dumbbell bench press.

though that will target specific muscles, youd still need the likes of press ups, squats, lunges, chin ups, pull ups etc to work the bigger muscle groups.

sit ups do build your abdominal muscles, but their pretty * in comparison to others e.g. crunches, leg raises, v-sit ups, the plank/bridge etc. and im not too sure about whether or not they burn much belly fat, probably not very much if anything. youd be best taking up something like running or cycling to burn the fat.

I jarred my knee at football last night when I was making a tackle. Totally swollen up and means I can't do football or the gym today. I'm totally gutted...

I'm not sure how heavy, but the weight can be changed. When they're all on there I probably couldn't do a single bicep curl. SO is there any way I could actually build muscle without joining the gym/having equipment such as a bench to lift the weights on?

So press-ups and sit-ups/crunches are worthwhile? And protein shakes aren't unless I can get to the gym?

    Cheers for the response

have you got any scales? weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the dumbbell and the difference will be the total weight of the dumbbell.

yes youll put muscle on without going to the gym, but obviously the restricted equipment means you cant do any of the compound exercises (squats, bench press, deadlift, pull up etc) that lead to proper muscle growth. and cause youve only got one dumbbell you cant do other exercises either.

but press ups, crunches etc will do you good. and you dont need protein shakes just yet, just try to up your protein intake through your diet, which really isnt too hard.

its actually a good way to if your scales are weighing correctly, we used to do it at the gym with 25k plates etc. the scales would often give a different weight.

The individual weights that go on the dumbell have their weights on them, so I can see what they are, but I don't have it with me at the moment. I'll have a look when I get home which will probably be tomorrow, staying at my mum's at the moment to help her out with stuff.

Cheers for the advice though, might try and find a cheap gym to join so I can do it properly. If I get one I'll be back in here for advice on what to do and how often to do it, haha.

    No bother :50:

You might be as well popping into a sports direct and trying on a few pairs first, even if you're gonna buy online - get a feel for them first - make sure they are comfortable enough.

I've a decent pair of Nike ones that are perfect for my feet :50:

It's a good idea to find out what type of runner you are, so you can get the correct type of trainers for the way you run.

    http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/shoes/choosing-a-shoe-the-very-basics/481.html

That explains the different types of running feet people have.
