Lazar Markovic will sign for Liverpool. 25M€, apparently. A third party owns 50% of his rights so they forced Benfica to sell. Ramires type of deal.

Wish him all the best, Liverpool bought a tremendous player. And he doesn't bite.

Why do Portuguese clubs deal so much in third party ownership?

Are all the best S. American players owned by third party ownership?

Its a good deal really, they are like the middle men Porto and Benfica. They get to use players they maybe couldnt afford to buy otherwise and can make money out of it. If they had to buy 100% ownership then they'd probably miss out on a lot of players as they couldnt afford them outright

We aren't allowed to do it in the UK, mind West Ham got fined £millions because they signed Tevez and Mascherano yet didnt own the players who were owned by a 3rd Party.

Someone (usually a loaded agent) notices the player and invests in him at an early age. They then sell a % to Benfica or Porto looking for a future profit. Markovic and Hulk being clear examples. Like ILoveTheCeltic said, Benfica and Porto would never pay around 15M€ for them at an unkown stage. So they share the risk. Sometimes they do well and both parts benefit, sometimes they don't and the funds lose money as well. In some other cases, portuguese clubs buy 100% of the player and then sell 10-30% in order to make some quick money. They share the risk but ofc the club loses money if they get sold in the future. As I said though, sometimes the funds lose money as not all of them turn out to be great players. There are risks involved.

Regarding the South Americans in particular, some of them are bought with the help of third parties, yes. Others not really. Di Maria, David Luiz, Nico Gaitan or Enzo Perez are examples of talented south americans bought without the help of third parties. Benfica sold part of their economic rights to a fund, however. Small percentages, 10-20%. Depends on the player hype, usually. Ramires was playing for the brazilian NT when he signed. We needed a good midfielder and we probably couldn't buy him without sharing the economic rights.

Jorge Mendes is the biggest shark of them all. He makes tons of money between Benfica-Porto-Zenit-Atlético-Monaco. Plus some other deals on the side, as we never really know if there are more agents/investors involved in deal. It's confusing and there are no clarifications. Usually the funds have strange names too. Benfica Stars Fund is the only transparent fund that I know. Jorge Mendes also puts some of his players in Rio Ave and is investing heavily in Braga this season (20M€). Check Diego Costa club history; Jorge Mendes bought him at an early age and he started playing for Braga. Mendes now has a new toy: Peter Lim, Valência. Nuno (former Rio Ave manager) is their new manager, bought Rodrigo and André Gomes from Benfica, etc. He's the puppet master.

Sorry for the text wall, many more things could be said. This is the short version:smiley-laughing002:

Certainly not, it is extremely interesting. I never knew Jorge Mendes had so much power, he surely has to be verging on hundreds of millions in wealth.

Whats he worth? And, how did he come to be friends with the Valencia owner?

Oh, and do you think anything illegal goes on with regards to these 'funds' and dealing with agents and third party owners?

Can't tell you much about Mendes as he never reports his moves (for example, officially we're supposed to believe that Braga invested 20M€) but I would say he has much more money than Cristiano:rolleyes: He's in the business for almost 20 years. Had some disagreements with José Veiga (Figo agent when he moved to Madrid) but since Veiga retired he's pratically unmatched. So he's the biggest player for about 10 years now.

This Nuno is the new Valência manager I was telling you about. In 1996 he was the first Jorge Mendes deal. 18 years later, hundreds of transfers, many millions involved... yea, he's making a fortune. Regarding his relationship with Peter Lim, can't tell you much. We probably wouldn't even know about him had he not bought the club. There are dozens of investors who remain anonymous between shady funds. Jorge Mendes and Peter Kenyon are some of the few who were linked to funds by the media but many more exist.

I do believe there's illegal stuff going on. For starters, apart from Benfica Stars Fund, we know little to nothing regarding the people involved. Seems perfect for money laundering if you ask me. But I'm just projecting... it's hard to believe there's only rainbows behind so much mistery.

On top of money laundering I think there is a lot of player exploitation taking place which could be illegal. As most Brazilian footballers are very young and have very limited levels of education, it is very easy for these groups to draw up horrible contractual clauses. The almost complete lack of transparency and confidentiality agreements makes it difficult to ensure these things don't happen.

Graziano Pelle signs for Southampton from Feyenoord for 8 million.

Cracking player, 55 goals in 66 games.
