    Even City wouldn't be so stupid as to * the best part of £25 mill on an injury-prone player with no sell on value, 1 year left on his contract and a grand total of one consistent season in his career.

    Hope he fails miserably, along with United.

    Midfield is fairly weak area I agree, if Fletcher wasn't ill then there would be no problem for me but Carrick and Scholes were too heavily relied upon last year (Scholes coming out of retirement highlighting that).

    Carrick will start nearly every game if he is fit this season, he was a key part of the team last year. Anderson is injury prone and Cleverly was also hampered by injuries last year (thanks for that Kevin Davies), he has looked good in pre-season but that doesn't really say much. We just need to see this year how it works out as Scholes obviously can't play 50-60 games, Powell will probably only play Carling Cup so the rest need to step up

    United aren't Arsenal's biggest rivals, maybe 7 years ago but not now. It's Spurs now, both geographically and league table wise

    United's biggest rivals are Liverpool, City, Leeds then probably Chelsea imo. Although it's still great to get one over Wenger

    :56:So why the * did they agree a deal with his agent back in jan then ?

    Not the player i would have signed i have already said he had 1 great season last year and could be injury prone , So it's a gamble but if Fergie thinks he is worth it and if Rooney and Rvp click they could be deadly.

    99= Cole ,Yorke,Teddy,Ole

    2012= Rooney ,Welbeck,Rvp, Chicharito = Tasty

    Ha, maybe both manchester clubs are as daft as each other then.

    Ridiculous deal IMO.

    I think Arsenal will do better without him, they'll be less reliant on one brilliant player.

    I'd rather Cazorla, Giroud and Podolski than an RVP who doesn't want to be there.

    Rooney and RVP will be a seriously tasty strike partnership too when they are both playing well. Rooney is good in patches, and RVP is a bit injury prone, but when they click it could be amazing.

    Man United need a centre midfielder though, not someone lightweight like a Modric or a Silva, more of a Yaya Toure, Javi Martinez or Alex Song type, if they get that they will win the league I think.

    agreed. Think everyone forgets this guy missed years of his career through injury. Also man utd can sign van persie and try and fool everyone but their defence and midfield are far from great

    Aye because City aren't known to spend big money on transfers that don't work out, I could list them but I'd be here for a while

    He was great last year but he also scored 22 in 33 the year before and 20 in 44 in 08-09 so it's not like he has burst onto the scene as a 28 year old, 132 goals and 62 assists with Arsenal back that point up

    I agree. Arsenal will have improved their squad on last season, definitely, despite losing RVP.

    They'd be better off keeping Song for another year, though.

    That's still debatable I would say, mate.

    And surely Arsenal would be more United's rivals than Chelsea? Even before Abramovich, Wenger, et el. United and Arsenal had a rivalry.

    No doubting RvP ability, he can score and create and if he can stay fit I would not like to be up against him and Rooney.
    But Arsenal must be laughing here. £24million? They didn't even get that for Henry and he only had a year left on his contract and let's face it was a much better player.
    Good business by Arsenal, stupid spending by Man U.

    just goes to show there is no such thing as loyalty in football any more (or its as rare as a 12 year old virgin in Methil) like others have said bye bye RVP hello Podolski and Giroud! I would like to think with the money they get they'll invest a wee bit more in the squad before transfer deadline.

    Yeah there was definitely a big rivalry in the 90s and first half of the 00s. It was down to United and Arsenal being in competition for trophies every year.

    There is still a rivalry and as I said, I love beating Arsenal and Wenger but consider Chelsea a bigger rival in competitive terms since about 2005 due to the influx of money and them challenging United more than Arsenal

    Better to sell disloyal, mercenary * than to cave in to their outrageous wage demands like old Merlot. Wayne Rooney being a case in point - announces his desire to leave the club then the club cave in and hand him a lucrative new contract.
