Brown should be playing that role in every European game, because he offers little to nothing in an attacking sense anyway. The game away in Molde, he was acting as our playmaker. That's just madness. He simply isn't good enough on the ball to play that role.

He's one of the only players that try and take responsibility when things are going wrong though. Bitton came back round into that game if I remember right and Broony stopped it. I prefer Broony properly in the middle, with a player behind him to focus fully on defensice duties.

He tries to, but he hasn't got the ability to be a playmaker. I would much rather Brown was in there doing the dirty work. He does it better than anyone in our team.

I'm not sure about that, he has got the ability to step up to the mark when others aren't, he's quite happy to go back into the dirty work when he's not needed to do so anymore. That's something I hope he doesn't stop doing.

I think keeping him in as disciplined a role takes a lot away from his game. Keep him in there as a central midfielder doing his thing. I'd want a Wanyama behind a Broony.

He's the best option for that role if we don't get a defensive midfielder in though.

That's it in a nutshell he's the best we have at playing that role at the minute..

Maybe a fit Mulgrew who is a defender at heart can play that roll too, but Charlie is not mobile enough for European football imo.

Brown is better in a 4-3-3 type role, utilising his engine and box to box play..

    Brown Bitton Johansen
    Forrest Griffiths Armstrong

That forward six has plenty of legs in it, wish Ronny would try different formations..:54:

I don't think mobility is a major plus in the defensive midfield role, sometimes it can actually be a hindrance, it's why Kayal couldn't play it propery. Charlue Mulgrew's good at reading the game and he's good on the ball. I'd be happy with him protecting two centrebacks:

    Gordon

    Lustig Boyata Simunovc Tierney

    Mulgrew

    Brown Bitton

    Commons____________Forrest

    Griffiths

Would see us through the likes of Malmo away from home I feel.

The bank of two in Scotland can get forward at will as far as I'm concerned but in Europe, both must stay goal side of the ball. That generally means Bitton carrying it 15 yards and playing a pass but not going beyond it, as that is his strong point and Broony staying back to cover for either the RB or a CB if the LB is ahead of the ball.

We just can't take the gung ho approach in the SPFL into Europe. It doesn't work and it's been proved it doesn't work.

Maybe in another 4 or 5 years if Ronny is still here and has honed his team into the vision he has in his head then fair enough. Until then he has to adapt or he is going to find himself looking for a new job in the middle of August.

I would love for us to keep doing what we are doing in the SPFL, score more than the opposition. I would rather win 3-2 than 1-0. It's not going to work in Europe though and we need to adapt and quick.

Aye I like the look of that, it's easy to forget about Charlie maybe he will still have a part to play, coming up for 30 could have a few years left yet.

Only useful in a change of system like yours above, would be a disaster in a 4-2-3-1, in Europe anyway.

Depending on how you play it mate, his best performance in recent years has been the Germany game for Scotland, in a 4231, against some of ghe best midfielders in the world. If you play him expecting him to be as mobile as Brown or Bitton you are on a flogging to nothing though.

Agreed, the whole side needs to work on defending as a unit something WGS is very adept at and we need lots of wok at, regardless of formation.

That's the crux of Ronnys problem. He expects ALL the team to be mobile running machines covering every blade of grass.
Sometimes a team just needs a player who will, like you say sit back, read the game and break things up.
It's obviously not how Ronny uses his system and to be fair it has worked in Nowrway, but he was in a lesser team where hard work is the biggest asset they can have against more talented and technical footballers.
We have players chasing balls all over the park and one long ball from back to front * us right up as all the midfielders are trying to press the ball into the oppositions corner flag.
The first half of this season we were constantly carved open by long balls and only pish poor finishing or decision making on the other teams part has saved us.

I'm still not sure Ronny is learning. Time will tell. We kicked * this time last season and then it all means * all in the summer.
