We wouldn't have our back 4 if we'd qualified. I'm convinced we'd have Virgil still and its not completely beyond the bounds of possibility we'd have had Denayer back for another year.

Sorry mate I've been in Tenerife :icon_mrgreen:

For me out of Deila's tenure there's only been 4 months were we were fully up and firing, the majority of the time it's been form like this. Just enough to get by but ultimately not good enough.

I think it is very fair to blame Deila, mostly because he keeps making the same mistakes, he has shown that he is out of his depth tactically or of if not he is stubborn/arrogant enough to believe that he doesn't need to tweak his system or change it up at all regardless of who we are playing.

He said judge him after a year, right now I've not seen much that he has promised or that he speaks about. Even at our brightest best last season I think we still seen a lot of our weaknesses shining through. Our inability to kill off teams being the most worrisome for me.

This is the one major plus under Ronny Deila that I can really get behind, he's a nitpicker with players, everything is under scrutiny, resting on your laurels isn't good enough you have to always progress. Bitton needed to improve defensively, he hasn't half, we can see Leigh Griffiths striving to improve his link up and hold up play every game.

He seems very, very good at personal improvement of players. Getting them to improve as a team to that level hasn't been shown yet.

I think he can be blamed last year. He came in and changed everything up far too quickly, it should be a gradual process. That was complete naivety for me, the way he approached the games were extremely naive. He's not an inexperienced manager or coach so that's not something that I can forgive easily just because past managers didn't manage to do so. It was the manner of our own self destruction.

The results domestically by and large have been good but considering the gulf in budget of us and everybody else it should be so much more than what we've seen, we look like we struggle every game, there's a mental weakness there I've never witnessed in a Celtic team. I thought we got rid of it in that 4 month spell last season but evidently not.

Would you be happy going into any game with us 1-0 up in the last 10 minutes? I wouldn't, I'd be thinking it's a draw or we're getting beat. That's unacceptable for any Celtic team for me.

There's a lot of football between here and the Champions League next year. He needs to prove himself every game as every Celtic manager does. He will always be questioned, if he can't handle the questioning when it's not going well then he may not have the mentality to be here. I think he's fine with the pressure though, what I'm not sure of is if he has the ability to kick on.

We need to sort our mental strength out, our team morale, our attacking play, our defensive play, our set pieces and our midfield.

    That's a lot to do.

The only thing we have going for us just now is Leigh Griffiths.

He had a real bond with Virgil, though. Not saying he'd have come back, but it's not impossible that Virgil would have persuaded him to come back for them to have one crack at the CL together.

I'll answer that in the GM section, mate. I'll explain why there too.

Good post Devlin. I think you are being too kind though in terms of player development. I think Griff wanted it and went out and took it but I do concede that Bitton has improved defensively. I want to see players progressing at a much better rate than I am seeing. Right now I am seeing some regression if truth be told.

Would us potentially being knocked out in the group stage not have knocked a few million off?

Deila made Griffiths want it, he threw down a challenge to him and Griffiths has risen to it magnificently. The way he has handled him is excellent.

See to be honest, I'm gutted about our failings under Deila - but I've seen enough to know that there are positives and our best is yet to come.

I cannie be * debating it on here because the negativity is draining.

Ronny and the Two Johns have my full backing.

I normally have good times for your posts but I completely disagree with this. Ronny froze him out for much of last season and had him playing reserve football. I dont want other people to myth about his apparent attitude because Leigh has been immense for us since we signed him.

Couldn't have said it better, of course what happened against Malmo was extremely disappointing but I'm still adamant there's a bright future with what we're trying to do.
