    Larbi Benbarek (4) Born in Casablanca, Morroco. 17 caps for France.

    I found this guy while desperately trying to find a player for the last 2 categories I had left. Pele once said "If I am the King of Football, then Larbi Ben Barek is the * of it".

    I think that pretty much sums it up. He was an attacking mid by trade but had the ability and strength to play further back in the centre as well. Recognised as the first African player to make a success of it in Europe.

    “The Black Pearl” or "The Foot of *" Larbi Benbarek is a forgotten first African legends who started playing football during the World War II, is regarded as one of the most talent players to born in the Africa. He had all the talents and gifts: touch of the ball, vision play, heading, dribbling, stature, and style. Pele made a famous statement about Larbi: "If I am the King of Soccer, then Larbi Ben Barek is the * of it". Ben Barek started well-known when he was hired to play football in France. Unfortunately, His career was interrupted by the onset of World War II. He came back to his best with Stade Français FC. He played for the only France national team. In Spain, with Atlético Madrid, where he truly blossomed and where his international fame spread. He sustain his high level performance until 41 years old before a retirement."

    "He would continue at Marseille until * occupation forced him back home. When the war was over, Atletico Madrid made him a lucrative offer. Atleti were locked in an intercity rivalry with the Franco-backed majestic Real Madrid.

    The move happened quickly and took most in France by surprise. The infamously harsh French media didn’t approve. One journalist wrote the famous line, ‘Sell the Eiffel Tower, but not Ben Barek’.

    Their indignation seemed justified when The Black Pearl scored 19 goals in his first season and helped Atletico to just their third Liga title.

    France also called on this Casablanca-born superstar for his duties. He played a quiet 19 matches for Les Bleus before finally retiring. His international career was emblematic of the peculiar paradoxes that sprung all over Ben Barek’s career.

    The French public adored the clunking midfielder and demanded his selection. And yet, he was never fully accepted as a true Frenchman. In 1954, in the swansong of Ben Barek’s career, he played for a friendly match for ‘North Africa’, who were nominally French, versus what L’Equipe had called, ‘The veritable French team (i.e. players born in France.’)

    And so in 1957, and after a transient stint in Algeria, Larbi Ben Barek permanently retired. It was eighteen years later, when playing a friendly in Morocco that Pele said, ‘If I am the king of football, then Ben Barek is its *.’

    He was undoubtedly the greatest player the world has ever neglected."

    Need to check that one though.

    He was also awarded the Fifa Merit award, the highest award available.

    Laporte, 22, who currently plies his trade with Athletic Bilbao, is one of Europe's top young talents and a highly rated central defender. In the past he's been linked with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and, more recently, Man City.

    Despite his impressive performances for Bilbao, he has yet to represent France at senior level (although he has featured for them at U17, U18, U19 & U21 levels). After repeatedly being snubbed for selection by Didier Deschamps, Julen Lopetegui (the current manger of the Spanish national side) has been trying to convince Laporte to switch his allegiances to Spain. He was eventually selected by Deschamps in October 2016, but did not feature in either of France's games against Bulgaria and the Netherlands. As such, his future with French national side is still up in the air.
