Seville was a long time ago, and we had a good chance of going all the way back then which we did, we are no-where near good enough now sadly. I would rather focus on the treble rather than exhaust player with travel and extra games for a poor run to the last 32 most likely and then elimination. If you are deluded enough to think we can go all the way then you need a reality check. There is a reason they don't throw money at the EL, because everyone knows it a tournament of losers. European version of the Petroflac ffs.

No because there is financial incentives and more exciting games, EL sadly is just a pish tournament. Tiring our players with travel and matches for a half arsed run just doesnt appeal, would rather just go for the treble.

Why do you think we have to choose between playing to progress in the EL and competing for the treble? Can we not do both?
We WILL win the league, so the cups are the only competitions where we could fall in our bid for the treble. How many cup games follow a EL game?
Even if they do follow the weekend after a EL game I think we can well afford to rest a player or 2 and still have enough to beat Raith Rovers.

The EL games last year took a toll on the players, our results we slightly suspect before Christmas, struggled to win convincingly and mustered 3 losses and 3 draws, after Christmas with only 2 EL matches we lost 1 an drawn 2 in the league and were much more convincing.

Just my opinion, I don't think it is worth it putting out strongest every week in EL unless we plan on winning it, but we don't have a squad capable of doing it so that's why I would be trying out a lot of youth players to see what they can do, I am not saying complete youth teams but not the strongest 11 every week.

I get what your saying about player fatigue but as we've shown against DUTD, we can rest almost our full starting 11 and still stroll games in the league. We can use league games against the lower teams to rest players and keep them fresh for the EL and the cups.
Would rather have a go at the EL and win the league by 15 points than to disregard the EL and win the league by 20 points.

Don't get me wrong if we were serious about trying to win it then I'd be really up for it but it just doesn't seem that way, The board and management will be looking for a run into the knockouts last 33/16 and that would be a success for them, we should be * aiming to win this tournament! With some investment in talent to match that intention not crazy money but at least an intention.

I said it on another thread but the board should really show ambition now. Whatever players we had lined up, depending on CL qualification, should still be persued. Show the potential players that we are ambitious enough to have a crack at the EL and will be ready for the CL next year.
No point sticking with the same team (minus a couple, like VVD) or getting in diddies and waiting/hoping that we qualify for the CL next year. It's been proven over the last 2 or 3 years that that strategy isn't working.

You're getting a hard time on here but I actually see your point. Our league is the number one priority. Aberdeen will give us a better fight this season, and we were pretty pish quite a few times after the EL. A lot of games will now be moved to Sunday as well.

I suppose I'm just angry and hurting about European football and I was there at every home game in the EL, top tier being closed because not enough fans give a *. Just * off. That defence without Virgil will be a * disgrace.

Why do we the supporters care about the financial benefits of CL to EL, will it stop us selling our best players No, do we get reductions in prices No, do we see start names coming into the club NO does Pete and the players who get payed fortunes get evenmore money YES,

I'm only interested in the fact that I can watch Celtic play against European teams up until Christmass and yes we could win the EL we nearly won the UEFA, so why not the EL yes we have declined in player stature but at least we can hope, DNIPRO made the final last year so we could do it this time round

    This place :s:

People acting like spoilt brats with some warped sense of entitlement. Spitting the dummy out because we're not in the CL and going into spite mode. Turning your nose up at the Europa League?! I respect your opinions though :50:

Over and Over, we will see you through,

The groups are better then any SPL gnaw and we do have the chance to get a english team or Dortmund or something.

Last 32 it does get pretty exciting. Inter game last season was every bit as goo as a CL group game.

So it's actually gotten to the stage where someone is suggesting we rest players in the European league to concentrate on the domestic cup competitions :smiley-laughing002:

Ach well time to move on, no point dwelling on Tuesday's result too much.

The draw today should be interesting - anybody know who has the rights to Europa league....is it BT alao?

I can see a Tuesday morning post training team talk in October now. "Lads we've got Alloa in the cup on Sunday so we're going to rest a few lads and only bring the development squad over to Dortmund on Thursday."
