It's the greatest song in the world, although it is sang a lot at football matches by both Celtic and Ireland fans (including Rugby teams like Munster and Connaught who sing it) the original meaning of the song should not be swept away either. It's a beautiful ballad.

Also, hate the fact those scouse * ruined it by coming up with their retarded version.

Got a signed Fields of Athenry frame by Pete St John... turned out his nephew lived with us for a year in Australia.

Hi AhmaTim,Basically it's an Irish Folk Ballad(and a very nice one too) based around a fictional charachter Michael during the Irish Famine(Irish Starvation if you want to get into the politics of it all)being sent to Botany Bay for stealing food to feed his young family. It really is a lovely song and never fails to pull at my heartstrings.
I've got to say that it does it's job every time i hear it...I often think of my Ancestors plight & struggles when i listen to it...it reaches way down into my soul.
    Especially this version...

I apologise for the late reply. Joemcl and Made in Ireland I really appreciate your thoughts. It helps me to understand some things.
I love the song personally. My wee Gran used to sing it to me while my Papa gave me the old head nod that said 'listen son, you should know this'.
I think some sing it for family and some for history but I know my history and I know who my family is.

Neil I think understands them, I think they know that now (so do the bookies).
I'd like to see the Bhoys take 3 in Paradise and remind everyone in Europe that Celtic is playing football with 1/10 of their budget.
I hope ours are as welcoming as I heard the Spaniards were.

I love the song. It's essentially a love song, where the two lovers are split by his need to steal for his family, to help them survive. There is nothing sectarian in the lyrics. Rebelling against the "crown" is not sectarian. There is no mention of religion, and being against a monarchy can't even be classed as anti-British sentiment. There is a whole movement throughout the UK that wants to overhaul the monarchy and replace it with an elected head of state. This movement is not related in any way shape or form with catholicism, or indeed any religion. If they are rebelling against the crown without being sectarian, how can someone in this song be accused of the same?

It's a fine old tune, and needs belting out every now and again.:50:

When its sung at volume its awe inspiring, a genuinely wonderful thing, a far cry from the * you hear in England.

I remember many, many years ago listening to radio 5 and either us or the forerunners of Sevco singing some song and the presenter heard it and was impressed and stated that one big difference between fans either side of the border is we sing lots of actual songs as opposed to simply chants, I always thought that was a good point as not many people other than West Ham, Newcastle, Birmingham have songs and certainly not more than one.

The point about Liverpool cannot go ignored, I actually get annoyed when hearing them fannies sing that retarded version, but all their songs are just hand me downs from Celtic or Scotland, they even have some odd version of the "Tartan Army Boys" for * sake

Love the song. And of I'm not mistaken when Celtic park was rebuilt didn't we lay a patch of turf in the centre circle with grass from athenrye?

One of the greatest pieces ever written. I've always listened to it before Celtic games, especially the bigger ones.

My favourite Celtic song, wish we sang it more. When it's played at night matches and it echoes around the ground it's fantastic.
