We can't afford him. That's how good McGeady is.

He'll no doubt play for Celtic again at 1 stage though. Fingers crossed.

He's looking top class at the moment he's going to have a great Euro. I'm delighted for him.

I'm actually generally interested how people can think he was a bad player for us.

It'll give ma chance to just scroll by there footballing opinions as absolutely ridiculous in the future :56:

How people can say that McGeady was no good is laughable. It's not even worth arguing about. We got £10m for him for a reason.. he's going to Poland with Ireland next week for a reason.

Yup, only creative outlet for a good while. The pressure on him to carry us at such a young age was incredible and he handled it admirably.

If we never had McGeady we wouldn't be where we are now. He, as you said, carried us for years and the money we made from his sale funded, at a guess, at least 50% of our current starting 11.

The McGeady sale funded 100% of Neil Lennon's first transfer window. Which is the majority of the team.

exactly. I was just saying our team is at least 50% funded by McGeady's sale.

    Forster - no
    Matthews - yes
    Rogne - no
    Mulgrew - yes
    Izaguirre - yes
    Forrest - no
    Kayal - yes
    Brown - no
    Ledley - yes
    Stokes - yes
    Hooper - yes

7 out of 11 funded by the sale of McGeady. 64%

Mulgrew, Matthews and Ledley would have came in anyway on frees. Stokes probably funded by Fortune. But yea McGeady made us big money and carried the team during his time here.

Not sure about Ledley, I imagine he would've took the gap in what was McGeady's wages.

When I said I didn’t rate him, I meant that I didn’t rate him as highly as some others. I saw him as a mediocre stand-out in a fairly dismal Celtic side. In fact, the worse we got, the more prominent McGeady became - it was pretty much symptomatic of the problem. He wasn’t even a consistent feature in the Celtic first team until Maloney left for Villa in January 2007.

I don’t remember McGeady ever carrying the team. Which season did this reputedly happen?

2007/2008 was probably his best season at Celtic, but even then we had many other outstanding players that season, so to suggest he carried the team would be nonsense. Boruc and Nakamura were at their peak, McDonald scored over 30 goals - and there were also significant contributions from JVOH, Barry Robson and Paul Hartley.

The following seasons, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 were dreadful for Celtic. So if the team started to be moulded around him from then, it’s no surprise we failed so miserably.

His forte was running with his head down, attempting a few pointless step overs every now and again, before squandering possession by either running it out of play or picking the wrong pass – something which he did quite regularly.

He was never a big game player. Anyone at Celtic who wants to be considered the key player has to show up consistently in the big games, something which McGeady never did.

At best all he could manage was the odd penalty against the Huns.

If I had the choice right now between Aiden McGeady on the left or someone like Alan Thompson (who didn’t have the same pace or fancy tricks) I’d pick Thompson every time. A much more effective player and a much more efficient player. Of course Thommo would never be sold for 10M, so in some people’s eyes he must have been *; not that it makes any difference for the pricetag argument is a strawman.

McGeady hasn’t even done that much out in Russia, certainly not meriting of the kind of hyperbole which you read on here. He’s done OK. But then, that’s about his level – OK.

He’s not world class, nowhere near it.
