Well of coarse it was much needed.... if he didn't play the match then he would have had to forfeit. :50:

Djokovic is a monster on hard court, cannot see anyone but him winning this to be honest.

Did you watch Murray's first match? If you did, you'll realize what I was getting at.

Don't let the British press fool you, just like football they're full of * in tennis as well.

Murray is not the in form player right now. Federer is. He won Wimbledon, Cincinnati and lost the Olympic final because his semi final was so gruelling.

Since the olympics Murray has played 3 matches, winning 2 and losing the third to Chardy, who is 100 levels below him. Murray has struggled with the surface transition.

Djokovic's draw makes him the favourite, as he will only have to beat Federer or Murray, this is vital as the final is played the day after the semi final.

Federer is second favourite as he owns Murray at grand slams, but when he gets by Murray (80% Federer's favour if they meet) he has to play Djokovic the very next day, and Djokovic will have had it much easier against Isner or Ferrer or someone standard like that in his semi final.

The British press seem to have equated the olympics as equal to a grand slam, in Tennis it is nowhere near. Murray is still as far away from a slam mentally as he was pre olympics. Wimbledon shows who is on top when it matters.

Both Murray and Federer are really hoping Djokovic loses early, and even if he does that it's not Del Potro in the final either.

Murray is third favourite by some distance here, don't let the press let you believe otherwise.

I don't think anyone on here is fooled by the British press. Djokovic should win this tournament. I didn't exactly celebrate Murray's Olympic win as I see it as a nothing tourny. However, it was very pleasing to see him take Federer apart.

Murray is in with a good shout for the US. Hard court is his favourite, and he traditionally does well here. If he is to win a major, and he has the game to do it, then this or the the Australian are the most likely places where he'll succeed.

    Mon the Murray!!

It's not the first time he's taken Federer apart, Shanghai 2010 was a brutal beatdown, so although it may have been pleasing (not to me, I love Federer), it may mean nothing long term.

There are a few comments in this thread saying Murray is the favourite and in form player etc, so a few people obviously do believe the hype.

Andy's definitely not favourite, but he does have a real chance.

Cracking performance from Murray last night, Stepping inside the base line getting aggressive taking the match to the opponent, the exact same thing he done against Fed in the Olympics. He needs to keep it up. His cross court forehands are just unbeatable at the moment. He needs to keep it up.

Very fortunately it must be said.

Most of his titles have been won by default anyway.

Exceptionally fortunate to come along when your only challenger is Andy Roddick.

You seem to know as little about tennis as MB. :56:

( For the record, Federer has won six of the last twenty slams - & nine out of the previous thirteen)

Andy Roddick was a fantastic player who was desperately unlucky to peak alongside Federer.

Never mind Safin, Hewitt, Peak Nadal, Davydenko etc.

All these players suffered because of how much Federer won, and as there was so little left to win they are seen as lesser to players like Murray, who hasn't even won a slam.

Federer has only won 1 of the last 9 slams (20 is a bit of an ott estimate) but it's been 4 years since his decline from his peak so the fact he has even won one this year is something in itself.

Not sure what was lucky about it btw, he dismantled Djokovic and then beat Murray playing the best match of his career. Murray played better in Wimbledon final than Olympic final, both matches are on youtube if you want to rewatch.

Despite the myths about this being 'tennis' strongest era' it isn't. There are only 4 guys who believe they can win anything big, and the field below them (with the exception of the injury prone Del Potro) is dire, seriously dire. Shown alone by the fact that Ferrer (a man of Federer's era) has his claws on number 5 for so long. Tipsarevic and Almagro and Monaco being top 10 should send alarm bells ringing as well.

This is where the champions league is going, only a small handful of teams will be able to win it and it will be *. Also what do you think zombie fc fans will say to us in 5 years about this and the next two SPL titles? Your only competition was Aberdeen! Better rethink the Roddick statement.
