I think it's fair to say there was nothing "sneaky" about the way he became manager. O'Neill had obviously intimated to the board what his situation was and so they had to replace him. Do you think Strachan somehow fooled the board into taking him on? Celtic are usually criticised for protracted discussions when trying to sign players or managers and when Strachan arrived, the board were praised for the swiftness in their negotiations.

You could say that the sneaky thing was Martin's exit. It was obvious for a long time that he felt he had taken us as far as he could and he was probably told that the big money for spending was no longer available. While I've every sympathy with him as regards his wife's illness, it was probably the aforementioned that precipitated his leaving, not the illness in itself, as we were led to believe. There's a theory anyway.

i have grown to like him 2bh. in the past his tactics and sticking with players who wernt performing was really frustrating, he stuck with magic for too long, and kept playing jj up fron when he was clearly a cm.

this season tho his signings have been good in my opinion and if it wasnt for injuries i think we would be clear at the top.

    From WGS' autobiography...

I first became aware of Dermot’s interest when we met by chance for the first time at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2005. A friend from my Coventry City days, an associate of the club’s directors, Eric Groves, invited my wife, Lesley, and me to be his guests in his hospitality box there. The suite next to it was occupied by Dermot, Eddie and various Irish football personalities such as Kevin Moran and Liam Brady. When Lesley and I bumped into Eddie and Liam as we were going for a walk, Eddie asked us to join him for a drink in their box.

I had been in the room for only a few minutes when I became conscious of a vaguely familiar distinguished-looking guy with a moustache looking at me. It was Desmond. He came over to introduce himself and asked what I was doing football-wise.

I told him: “I would like to return to football, but a lot of the jobs aren’t that much different from the ones I had at Coventry and Southampton. Maybe that’s my true level as a manager, but I would like to try something more exciting.” There was no way I was angling for Martin’s job, it was just a general comment about my situation. However, Dermot said: “Well, we don’t know how long Martin is going to be here. He will never get the sack from Celtic, but maybe he will want to go somewhere else.”

Referring to the Manchester City situation, I then said: “There is something in the pipeline for me, so I could be going somewhere myself in a few weeks.” But Dermot said: “If you do, make sure you have a get-out clause in your contract.”

Two days later I received a telephone call from Kevin Moran. He had been listening to my conversation with Desmond and he said: “I bet you couldn’t believe what he was saying to you. But take it from me — he meant every word. He does not tell porky pies.” Then came the call from Desmond to tell me that Martin would be leaving at the end of the season, and to invite me to have further talks about the job.

At our meeting my only stipulation about joining Celtic was that the approval of it had to be unanimous. I said: “I know you are the major shareholder, but I am not coming along if it’s just you who wants me here.”

I considered it particularly important that Celtic’s chief executive, Peter Lawwell, the boardroom figure with whom I needed to have the closest working relationship, was in agreement on my appointment. I actually pulled him aside and said: “Look, if you don’t fancy me, just let me know and I won’t come here. You have my promise that if this is the case, I won’t drop you in it, I will just make an excuse.’

Peter seemed aghast at the suggestion. He stressed that he was just as enthusiastic about me being at Celtic as Dermot and Martin were. But I did have a major credibility hurdle to overcome with the Celtic fans. It could be that I still do.

He was lined up because the board knew that MO'N might leave due to his wife's illness. That's why they were able to bring him in so quickly. Notice that MO'N was involved in the decision as well.

You may pull out every press/ book cutting you like but I felt it was sneakily done and had the fans been aware then he may not be manager of Celtic now.

Then again, maybe not as our voice often is ignored.

If that is the only comment you can find fault with in my summarization then I'm happy enough :50:

    PS

I wonder what those Man City fans would have thought if the 'sneaky git' had put a get out clause in because he may be going to Celtic.

I'm sure their opinion of would have been sweet!

I could have done them all, but that would be going over really old ground which I've done plenty of times before. The 'sneaky arrival' thing was a brand new insult.

    That's a bit disingenuous..

We all make judgements on the public persona of people who are in the public eye.

What do you think of Victoria Beckham ?

Realy I dont remeber you answering all of those points before. I think it would have been interesting to read your answers to thombhoy´s points. I think most of them were valid. Although I agree with you on the first one. To only answer one point and to skip the rest seems a bit of a cop out.

Stated it many, many times before, Doc, as one of the reasons as to why I was unhappy at his appointment, for me, personally.

You state it as though it was a direct insult to Strachan only. Perhaps that is the way you want to interpret it, however, if you read it directly - not even needing to read between the lines - you will read it as an attack on the board as well as Strachan.

I see no further point in debating anything in relation to Strachan with you, mate.

Agree to disagree and move on.

    Self opinionated? Definitely.

Serious 'grow up' pill needed, Doc!

People who create these threads need to realize people are allowed a difference of opinion and may like or dislike Strachan in terms of his personality or his managing skills for whatever reason, but its their opinion.

As a Tactician i think Strachan is no more than average and was fortunate for his 1st 2 seasons that we werent up against good competition within the SPL.
The fact is that the competition havent improved that much but were sitting 4pts behind the vermin.

As a manager he appears to have his favourites and picks them over better player. See Caldwell Vs Balde for confrirmation of this fact.
He also seems to have communication problems with certain players.

As the public face of the club he is disapointing. He appears churlish, childish and bad mannered when asked valid questions. Ive never had a problem with him puting the media in their place when they are asking stupid or loaded questions btw.

Can't agree with that at all, like it or not Rangers are a far tougher proposition under Walter Smith with a united dressing room and an apparently rejuvinated captain.

Can someone explain to me how Strachan 'sneakily' got the Parkhead hotseat? I'm struggling to understand this accusation tbh.
