Far more opportunities to win it though. A top player throughout his career will probably get 3, or 4 chances at a push to win the World Cup. In comparison with possibly 16+ attempts at the Champions League.

The very top level? Define the very top level and how he hasn't proved himself there already? :smiley-laughing002:

He's got to the world cup final and dragged Argentina though some of those games remember the winner he scored vs Iran? Iran aint the hardest team to play but it took his magic on that stage to win them the game?

And ill not even bother going on how he has scored countless goals in Barcas winning champions league campaigns but yeah your right he's not proved himself at top level until he wins the super bowl

Still think it's a higher level of competion.

Lots of top footballers have never had the chance to win the Coronation Cup, doesn't mean its the world top competion you know:icon_mrgreen:

International football is mostly a gamble for me anyway, poor George Weah:54:

C.Ronaldo, arguably was the 2nd best player in the world for 8 of the last 10 years, but guys like Neymar, Suarez and even Bale have surpassed him as great footballers in todays game.

No chance he should be on this list when guys like Ronaldo(Brasil), Zidane, Cruyff, Di Stefano, Jinky, McGrory, Maradona, Pele, Beckenbaur, Best all outshine him throughout history.

Messi will go down as the best ever, with guys like the above being at his level.

Ronaldo will go down as the best footballer of the level below them.

Does that not add to the argument that it is harder to win a World Cup? :icon_mrgreen:

To be fair, Cristiano Ronaldo at his peak, which for me was late Man Utd Career and early Madrid career was a better player than Suarez, Neymar and Bale.

His determined effort to become a sheer goal machine has taken away from his overall game though.

There's not even an argument that the World Cup is a higher standard than the Champions League.

A squad of players that meet up once in a blue moon v a squad of players that live in each others pockets on a training field or football pitch 11 months of the year.

The fact one takes place annually and the other every 4 years is immaterial to the difficulty of the competition.

Personally I'd rather win the Champions League than a World Cup, I am probably in the minority there.

If we were to use the argument that Messi isn't the greatest because he hasn't won a World Cup, then surely in regards to Maradona, we could say he isn't comparable with Messi because he never won the European cup? Never mind 3 or 4 whatever it is Messi is on now, by the age of 28! I know you said you aren't using that as an argument but just for the sake of it.

Same with Pele, he never played in Europe once throughout his career. I know things were different back then but European football was surely still the best level. He'd probably still have ran amok but who knows. Once again, he doesn't have a European cup or a European title to his name.

So Messi still has to prove himself at the top level and Cristiano Ronaldo is the best ever.

    I'm out.

Agree, in his prime - about 7 years ago now - he was better than Neymar, Bale, Suarez. But since then he has dropped/they are better than him today.
Ronaldo will go down as being the best of that tier, Messi will go down as the best of the true elites.

Depends on what country you're from mate :smiley-laughing002:

It adds to the argument that the quality isn't as high, scarcity of the competition and the nature of the teams makes it harder to win, not the quality of the teams vying to win it.

Best International team I've seen was Spain between 2008-2012, largely made up of Barcelona players. Barca would have smashed them in that period, if such a game was possible.

Goals isn't the be all when talking about the true greats of the game though.
