I think that you can only blame half the south now. Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida are all with Obama... I think it's time for people to redirect their anti-racism to the planes states now, which for some reason they never have before. I'm looking at Nebraska, Oklahoma, the Dakotas, and the rural West like Idaho and Wyoming. I think parts of the South have earned the right not to be lumped in with the pack ESPECIALLY Appalachia, where my family is from. I am simply stunned and happy at the numbers coming out of there... not because I like Obama but because for them to vote for him represents a change in the way they look.

 

Republicans are booing. Classy.

Yeah but Florida has never been a real part of "The South". Virginia and NC are a decent beachhead, but that's about it.

 

Agreed, although a lot of Republicans voted for Obama so you can't paint them all with the same brush. In Indiana 33% of the people that voted for the Republican governor crossed over and voted for Obama. I think one thing to take from this election is you can't blame the populace anymore, people crossed over a lot this election... On that note, it's just getting ugly.

McCain could have done much better if he'd talked like he's talking now for the entire campaign.

 

Fair play to McCain, he's just shown he is a gracious and humble guy.

 

Yeah, he's exuding some real class at the end here.
Regaining some respect after a terrible and very dirty campaign. His supporters, unfortunately, don't share that class at all.

 

Grats to Obama. Now we get to see if is really going to change things or if he is just a "celebrity".

He won Florida because of a change in North Florida, which has always been considered the South. He was 50/50 in Duval and carried Alachua both of which were destroyed when Kerry tried to take them. I consider the Panhandle part of the West South, which now is the direction of my anti-racist ire.

 

That's true but outside the Pcola area, the state is very different from the rest of the "south." There are a lot of retirees, a lot of ex-military, a lot of affluent middle class, a lot of cubans, big cities, etc.
That's why it's been targeted now and in the past as a state that is capable of being flipped.

 

McCains speech was great... but I can't wait for the trainwreck speech that'll come from Palin at some point.

Yea I never consider from Flagler county to the west and to the south part of the South. Florida is two very different areas... now it appears it is three different parts. North, south, and Panhandle. It used to be that Jacksonville wasn't so different than Tallahassee, apparently, and luckily, that is no longer the case.
