Shame to see him go, could have been a Brown like level of hero here.

But at the same time the way he seemed to hold the club to ransom (from the perspective of a fan looking from the outside), is unforgivable, I guess to some extent his sale pays the majority of the supposed fee for Eddie so I'm seriously conflicted on this one.

Either way, hope does well and get his inevitable £55mill move to Liverpool in two years.

The closest Armstrong has come to brown while at Celtic was that of GMS's back side in the showers...

Not one bit, his goals and drive like how he performed in the season before last was fantastic and at points this season showed just how much we missed that drive.

If he kept at it and continued performing like that then he would have been a hero here.

However much like majority of young "ambitious" footballers nowadays he took us for a ride and tried to get more then he deserved after 1 outstanding season.

But I honestly have no doubt if all this contract talk went the right way and he kept up how he performed previously then he'd have gone on to have a special career here.

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of highly-rated attacking midfielder Stuart Armstrong from Celtic.

The 26-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the club and will link up with his new teammates on Thursday for the start of pre-season.

Armstrong established himself as a major creative force in midfield during his three-and-a-half years with Celtic, notably netting 17 goals during the 2016/17 campaign alone, as he helped the Glasgow giants to an unbeaten season and the first of back-to-back domestic trebles.

In total, Armstrong won eight major domestic trophies during his time with the Scottish club, and also brings with him significant European experience, having made 25 appearances in the Champions League and a further eight in the Europa League, while he has been named in the PFA Scottish Premiership Team of the Year three times.

The Scotland international, who began his career with Dundee United before joining Celtic in 2015, chose to move to St Mary’s amid strong interest from other Premier League sides, becoming the first addition of the summer to Mark Hughes’s squad.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes said: “Stuart is a player who we have admired for some time, and I am delighted we have been able to bring him here, especially given the competition we faced to sign him.

“We have strong players in the squad and it is important we build on that by adding different qualities. It is important we add a greater goal threat to the team as a whole, and to our midfield specifically, and Stuart’s record of scoring and creating makes him an extremely exciting addition in that area.

“He brings with him extensive experience of European football and has developed his game impressively over the past few seasons at a major club in Celtic, where there is a demand not only to perform but also to win. Stuart has done both during his time there.

“Our research tells us he is an excellent young man, intelligent, and a strong team player, and clearly having another really good character in our group is part of what we want here at Southampton.

“He has shown tremendous drive to improve and has also displayed a great desire to be a part of what we are trying to achieve here, and I believe he will be a real asset to the squad in the years ahead.”

Commenting on the move, Armstrong said: “Southampton seems a really good fit for me. Watching from afar, I really enjoy the attractive football that they play and I’m very happy to be here.

"Every season, I put demands on myself to create and score goals. I hope going forwards from here that it will be the same this term at St Mary’s.

"I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and I’m very excited to get started. It’s a four-year contract; there will be a lot to learn and I want to hit the ground running."

MIDFIELDER Stuart Armstrong has joined Southampton on a four-year deal after three-and-a-half highly successful and impressive years at Celtic Park. The 26-year-old Scottish internationalist moves to the English Premier League side and will link up with his new team-mates when they resume pre-season training.

Armstrong joined Celtic in February 2015, along with Gary Mackay-Steven, on a transfer deadline day move from Dundee United, and both players scored on their Celtic debuts, netting in a 3-0 victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill.

In helping the Hoops win the league title, he made 17 appearances, and also scored on a memorable night at Paradise as Celtic drew 3-3 with Inter Milan at home in the UEFA Europa League.

The following season he was a regular in the starting XI, making a total of 39 appearances and scoring two goals as the Hoops once again lifted the league title, their second under Ronny Deila.

Armstrong played his part in the Invincibles' treble-winning season under Brendan Rodgers, making 47 appearances and scoring 17 goals, including Celtic’s final goal in the 5-1 demolition derby in what was Brendan Rodgers’ first Glasgow derby against Rangers. Last season he made 41 appearances as the Hoops clinched the Double Treble, scoring five goals.

And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he was the subject of a brilliant fans’ song, which paid tribute to his football ability and his impressive hair style!

In total, Stuart Armstrong made 144 appearances for Celtic, scoring 28 goals. He won four Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups while also helping the Hoops reach the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the past two seasons and, last year, progressing on to the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.

Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Stuart for his fantastic contribution to the success the club has enjoyed during his time here, and we want to wish him every success in the future with Southampton.
