We could afford that but could we afford his wages, could we afford to get into a bidding war with Zenit? I dont think so

The team is designed (when its on form) to play a possession game designed to squeeze the maximum out of only moderately talented players. Liverpool's great teams of ther 70s and 80s that won the European cup loads of times played the same sort of percentages keep-ball game and it was hard to watch at times. However, what they share is they starve the other team of the ball and knackers them and there is no doubt it works. Look at WGS's trophy hall and moderate CL success. Speaks for itself. Personally I have no wish to go back to the Tommy Burns days of swashbuckling flair football run by real passionate Celtic men who win no trophies. Scotland was nearly the last place on earth to understand the importance of keeping possession of the ball at all costs and it looks like Celtic fans are turning out to be the slow learners of all. The continental teams were doing this decades earlier than us and that is basically why we were so poor in Europe from 1972-2000 despite having better players than we do now. It the head not the heart that wins in football over the long haul that is a league championship.

I remember seeing their basic wage and the share options issued to Lawwell and another board member.

I wouldnt consider 2.5M spending big, spending £5M I would consider big. Getting a player thats the highest on the wage bill would be considered a big financial risk in a January window

Nobody is going to sell players for cheap in the Jan window unless they've fallen out of favour or damaged goods in one form or another but fans expected Celtic to go for players that they werent convinced would do better than what they already had.

I cant believe that people are moaning about the January transfer window, were people expecting to get back Bellamy??? :56:

This is really patronising Keltoi. You seem to be saying that folk who aren't happy with the football we play are ignorant.

The football we play is pish and has been getting steadily worse. That's not my heart talking that's my eyes. Folk who can't see this are the ones who are slow on the uptake.

Very true and the bolded is especially true.

Its like use direct football or get pelters. The above is how MON's team were dismantled in Europe. They were tactically naive.

Ask any player, its far easier with the ball than without it and if you are tired everything else in your game goes to *. FACT

Any decent player worth their salt will want to play in a better league than the SPL. If Celtic rates a player you can be guaranteed that another club in a richer/better league is watching too and can outbid us quite easily.

This situation isnt going to change anytime soon unless an opportunity to get out of the SPL arises.

iv always said that the january transfer market is a time of over the top over greedy people wanting disgusting amounts of money for average players!
the epl is prime suspect for this and the wages also for the players is * outragous to say the least!!

Could you share with us the total of bonuses paid to the directors ?

IMO £2.5m is a big spend for us as we have only once spent more on a player (Scott Brown) in WGS's time with us.

    Who mentioned Bellamy ?

I mention January because I'd be interested to know if the board paid themselves more in bonuses than we spent on players, and I think most fans would like to know.

Sorry but I don't see how this relates to my post which you have quoted. I am pointing out that we do not play a possession/passing game as we lump the ball forward as often as not and we are * at keeping possession.

yip keeping possesion is a no show for us at the moment we cannot do this at all.
we usually get to 5-6 passes if we are lucky before we give it away . so i agree there with martin.

Maybe you should look up possession stats for the last 10 matches

Which drives me nuts , a long ball up to a striker that stands maybe 5ft 8-9inches ,defenders lap that up .

Celtic are the best team in scotland but still persist in playing all to often the high ball on a lot of occasions and are found wanting ,JVOH and Samaras are no sutton and hartson who terrorised defenders ,the 2 we have at present are limp in the air compared to sutton and hartson ,when they play in europe the opposition play football on the deck and make our players look like there not there half the time .

Zenit only went for Huszti after it was clear Arshavin was going to Arsenal which was near the end of the window, if we had made a bid as soon as the window opened we may well have got him.

Come on this is sheer speculation. The players agent was savvy and obviously knew there were other teams interested. He played the waiting game and came up with a better deal. Money rules over timing...
