I would be very surprised if he is still here post the January window. There has been interest in taking him from various places for a while. He was awful today and largely has been that way when he has played for a while.

Being honest he has done well to play as often as he has for Celtic at first team level as he is a very average player. I could see Murray play the 5th choice club trained centre back next season and Welsh being off.

Needs to be playing every game, with a settled defence. He's not as bad as some are saying, or as we're playing him to be with the piecemeal appearances, but he's not going to get games at our level now and won't improve without them.

As you say, the move would be best for all parties now, and free the space for another development player to come through

Him being here for as long as he has, barely playing has probably contributed to his stagnation/decline as a player. For his own sake he needs to go somewhere he’ll play regularly and improve as a player. Going by what he showed today, there’s not many (if any) teams he’d get into in the premiership which shows just how much he’s declined from when he first came into the team.

How he’s above Nawrocki in the pecking order is beyond me, and even he doesn’t look anywhere near good enough.

He’s so poor on the ball, slow to move it on and unable to pass it beyond either the full back next to him or the other centre half. Whilst his use of the ball has never been exceptional I don’t remember it being quite as bad as it was today, the drop off from scales to Welsh was frightening today.

Welsh is an absolute bombscare and has been for years. Every defeat Ange suffered, was with Welsh in the team. Just get him to eff.

Unless we produce or buy a home grown player or trained in Scotland he is going to be here till the end of his contract.

Dane Murray has been doing well on loan for Queens Park in the Championship. They haven't conceded many goals. He started both of the recent Scotland u21 matches too and scored in one.

If he can stay fit, he might well be worth a place in the squad next season.

He had a chance of being good years ago. Never played though, it's now passed. Bad management over the years really but need shot and another young guy in.

Why though? Doesn’t wash at all when you really think about it.
We’ve plenty youth players who’d be more deserving of stepping into that squad than Welsh (which they can do without being registered in it, if they’re under-21 and club-trained).
If we’d left him out of the squad, the worst that would’ve happened is it’d left us it a man down due to the regulations. That’s actually not a problem.

I’d much rather have taken just 4 recognised CBs. The possibility of ending up playing Engels as an emergency CB is far, far more appealing than the thought of Stephen. actual. Welsh. coming up against Villa and Dortmund. Stuff of nightmares.

Think about it, it should have happened by now but he’s still here. I agree I don’t think he’s good enough but there is a reason he’s not been sold and the only thing is, home grown and trained at the club.

Thought Murray was going to be the next big thing until his injuries to be fair.

Hopefully he can stay fit and then see where he is at come the end of the season but there is question marks against him regarding injuries.

He’s as good a player as porteous is and he’s managed to go make an okay career for himself. Welsh just needs a move to the likes of hibs/aberdeen/dundee United etc. and he’ll do okay playing regularly at that level

I’ve been one of his biggest supporters in the past, but it’s now beyond the stage where he has to leave for his development. I actually feel he’s at a point of damage limitation. He has to choose between salvaging something of a career for himself, or facing steady decline and being out of the game by the end of his deal here.
Even if he left now, he would probably have to go to a mid-table Champ team like Dunfermline or the like in order to find his level. Honestly didn’t look anywhere near good enough for Falkirk yesterday, let alone us.

Would send him out on loan in January, ideally yo Italy. Hopefully he'd do well enough for us to get a decent fee for him.

Celtic defender Stephen Welsh plans to hold talks with manager Brendan Rodgers over his long-term prospects as he wants to leave the Parkhead club in search of regular football next month, according to the Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old has played just once this season for the Hoops and is keen to go elsewhere for more opportunities.

He is currently behind Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki in the pecking order of the Hoops boss, and his chances of kicking a ball this season are as slim as they come.

I bet he wishes he moved to Italy a couple of years ago

Hes been really unlucky with injuries but his loyalty to the club has stalled his career/progression.

Surprised it took this long. Wish him all the best, but he was never going to be a first choice here.
