He's never really let us down he's just not a massive stand out either I would happily have him here as a back up option

I thought he was excellent when he came on. Very steady next to Nawrocki.

If he could keep it up and cut out the mistakes he’d be a good option.

Brendan Rodgers told Stephen Welsh he sees the defender’s future at Celtic Park after he came in from the cold to help the champions see off a spirited Aberdeen in a 3-1 victory at Pittodrie.

Welsh replaced the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers at half-time with Celtic 2-1 ahead following an exciting opening period.

It was the centre-back’s first appearance for 10 months and he strolled through the 45 minutes with Aberdeen unable to carve out many clear-cut chances despite some decent spells of possession.

Rodgers is hoping to secure a new centre-back in the coming days after Celtic made a move for Elfsborg’s Gustaf Lagerbielke.

But he sees Welsh as a key part of his squad following the departure of Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo.

“I thought he was excellent when he came in,” Rodgers said. “I like Stephen. I took him with me one pre-season when he was a young player because I really liked him.

“For whatever reason he hasn’t maybe played the games but he’s a Celtic boy who wants to be at the club. I want him to be at the club.

“I said to him, ‘I can’t guarantee you how many games you are going to play. You may play 40 games in the season’.

“But I know he is always ready. He trains very hard every day and he came into the game, he played with composure, and he is aggressive. It was really well done from him.”

Tbh I'm glad for him to stick around. He's never going to be first choice but you need players like him and Ralston who will do a decent job when called on even though they are used sparingly throughout a season.

Great news imo, fantastic option to have as a backup.

Got to laugh. Getting a good deal of praise here, but on next week's game everyone has dropped him for a player who hasn't even signed for us yet.

He’s fine for a back up. Comes in and does a job without doing anything spectacular or making any major mistakes. I like him and having CCV, Rocky, The Swede and him will be best we’ve had at CB for a while.

Looked solid when he came on. Never understood some of the criticism he gets, aye he's not the best CB we've ever had and isn't gonna take us to the next level but we've had far worse in recent years.

Thought he was ok today and more than happy to have him around as cover.

Never really got the hate (waiting on someone finding a post from 3 years ago me slating him :giggle1:)

No world beater but dependable enough and actually much better backs to the wall defending if *shudder* we had to rely on him at any point in Europe.

40 odd games somewhere else would be a lot more beneficial to us and him

Why? He's too old to be loaned out now (I think)

He's no world beater and never will be but he isn't as bad as people make out.

Worth keeping around for the homegrown quota if nothing else.

If he wants regular game time he needs to go to another club, you don't look at a player as 4th choice, you look at their ability to compete for a startin place, i don't see him as a regular starter.

You need a 4th choice though and he is very much a 4th choice CB for a club like us. Unspectacular but I struggle to remember any massive mistakes from him.

If he is happy to be back up then I don't see the problem. Would rather him than Kobayashi for example.
