    Unreliable. He needs to go.
The amount of howlers he has committed in big games has sealed his fate with Ange.

He’d only ever be a squad player for us in the big picture, he’s good enough domestically and think he’d do excellent at the Sheep or Hibs. A loan is a good option but think it’s best if he does move on.

He's only 22. A lot of CBs keep improving well beyond that age. Not totally against selling, but would want a couple of mil. If we can't get that, better sending him out on loan and hoping he improves. If he does, he could be a good player to have in the squad, or at least earn us a decent fee.

Think it’s a good move for both parties to let him go.

He has had a few howlers but overall he’s been pretty steady and could kick on with consistent game time. He’s not going to get that with us so it’s best to move somewhere that he will.

If we get a decent fee for him then even better. Frees up a space in the squad and adds cash to the transfer kitty.

Yet to see Kobayashi but all going well with him, I’d be happy with having CCV, Starfelt, Kobayashi and Jenz as our CB options.

The upside of a loan is, he gets regular game time for the second half of the season. It worked a treat for Kris Ajer, working with Steve Clarke at Killie. Ajer wasn't instantly the finished article on his return but his development and progress was there for all to see by getting that regular game time at this level in a team that by necessity usually has to do a lot of defending was ideal to get that experience under his belt.

Come the end of the season, it can be reassessed how Welsh has progressed. It also means that he is still on our books going into the new season, where as a homegrown academy graduate he ticks a few boxes in so far as is required for UEFA squadlist, along with CalMac, Forrest & Ralston. Whether he actually gets game time is another matter, but being part of that squad helps with that quota, so unless Ange has other academy graduates ready to move into the first team squad, it's not a bad idea to hedge the bets, so to speak.

Honest, hard working professional, who just isn't good enough to cement a place.

    Hibs, Aberdeen level.

Meanwhile, Celtic are also willing to listen to offers for Stephen Welsh. The young defender has come through the ranks but has fallen down the pecking order under Ange Postecoglou.

Welsh is keen for more regular first-team football and Celtic won’t stand in his way. It remains to be seen if that will be a loan deal or a permanent departure for the 22-year-old who has interest in England and Europe.

He's a decent player that could thrive with regular gametime at another club, just not up to the standard we require tbh.

For all we know it might be Welsh who's pushing for a move, wanting to play regularly. I'd be happy with a loan, but also won't be too disappointed if he leaves.

The MLS would be a good move for him. Probably get a lot of game time over there as well.

Sheffield Wednesday looking to sign Celtic defender Stephen Welsh on loan to help promotion push
Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign Celtic defender Stephen Welsh on loan for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old centre-half is currently being kept out of the Celtic first team by Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, while the arrivals of Japanese defender Yuki Kobayashi and fellow countryman utility player Tomoki Iwata has enhanced competition in that part of the first team.

Welsh, who has also been linked with moves to Udinese in Serie A and French Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse, is a boyhood Celtic fan and has come through the youth academy. However, he has struggled for regular game-time under current manager Ange Postecoglou and now has to weigh up what is best for his career, with Owls manager Darren Moore looking to strengthen for a promotion push from Skybet League One, where they currently sit second in the table.

Welsh also has other admirers in England, while teams in Scotland are monitoring his situation.

A loan to league one didn't hurt McGregor's progression so I'm not too concerned about it. Having said that I'd rather we got more players loans abroad.

McGregor was about 19 I'm sure..

Welsh is 23 and been played in Europe and loads of first team football. It's a backwards step in his development going to league 1..

Championship or might as well just loan him to a side in our top flight..

Needs game time. But since we've let jenz go I don't see this happening. It's a shame how little he's played and should have been loaned start of the season coz he could be a good player. He's shown signs of being a good player but can't be relied on right now. Best he goes out and comes back pre season

He was 20, but I take your point. The problem with a loanee going to the championship is game time, he's much more likely to get regular games in a lower division.
