Jorge Cadete last night warned Celtic Portuguese side Braga are capable of smashing their Champions League dreams.

The former Portugal striker remains a cult hero at Parkhead after his goal-laden stint in the 1996/97 campaign.

Cadete still keeps a close eye on the team’s fortunes and watched in disbelief last term as Tony Mowbray’s side slipped out of Europe.

He fears that, unless Neil Lennon can make an instant impact, Braga could end Cel tic’s continental ambitions even earlier this season.

Ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifying opener in Portugal, Cadete said: “I think this tie could be very open. I have to say, I believe Braga have a really good chance of going through.”

The modest northern Portu guese outfit surprised giants Porto and Sporting Lisbon last term to grab second place in the league, behind Benfica.

Cadete, now a regular on the showbiz circuit in his homeland, has warned his old club not to make the same mistake in underestimating little-known Braga’s threat.

“Braga showed last season they are not afraid of big reputations. It was a big achievement for them to finish second in the league.

“They are very, very strong at home and have beaten Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica convincingly in their own stadium during the past year. Braga don’t have a lot of big names. In fact, their star player Eduardo, the goalkeeper, was sold in the summer.

“But they are a very effective team and the club has a good set-up. They can be confident, with good reason, that they can go through.

“Of course, Celtic will always be close to my heart, but I think Braga have the quality to win and progress.”

Despite his prediction, however, the 41-year-old does believe Lennon’s men can triumph if they succeed in harnessing the Parkhead crowd in the second leg.

Cadete remembers the surge of electricity he felt the first time he ran out, as a late substitute against Aberdeen 14 years ago.

The reaction of the Celtic support was, famously, so loud it knocked BBC Radio 5 Live’s commentary off the airwaves for a full 15 seconds.

Cadete, who that night scored the first of 39 goals in 46 appearances for the club, added: “I will never forget my debut at Celtic Park for as long as I live. I played in Portugal, Spain and England, too, but I never heard anything like it.

“If the crowd is with them, Celtic can always do something special. The atmosphere in the stadium is spectacular and it’s not a cliche to say it’s like having an extra player.

“It’s not an aggressive feeling, it’s like a party around a football match. For me, that will always be Celtic’s biggest strength.

“The crowd always urge Celtic on, and apart from the great rival Glasgow Rangers, they even applaud opposition teams on occasion.”

Hate to say it, but I agree.. I think we have a tough game. No sense trying to downplay it.

Was never a question. They came second in a far better league. I think it was more than their GK they lost this summer though, was it not?

Braga are very poor defensivly but good going forward but will we exploit the poor defense? or will we not by going 1 upfront which i think we will.

Most will say watch out for Braga, so what else is new or how could it be otherwise, considering the abismal record Celtic have of late in Europe and the team more or less since the last days in GS`s tenure to present we dont have an established regular first team yet.
Playing the new guys against Braga is ok by me all things considered, if it works great if it dont well so be it.
Either way we have a good chance to go through over the two legs, and I am sure Braga thinks they will have no preblemo for them going through.
We shall see!

Braga have built their team on a strong defense, last season they only conceded 6 goals at home and lost no matches.

Jesus that is some record for a team i had never heard of before we drew them for this game..

I would happily take a score draw back to Paradise.. We have to be beating teams like this if we ever wanna be considered a (small)force in Europe.. For the away leg my starting team would be:

I watched there games in pre season... and 1 of the games 3 defenders ran into each other and they looked all over the place.
